Funeral Services for Dean L. Berry will be conducted from the Bethel Lutheran Church in Holdrege, Nebraska on Tuesday, January 31, 2012 at 10:30 a.m. with Pastor Paul Snider, officiating. Interment will be in the Prairie Home Cemetery at Holdrege.

Dean LeRoy Berry, 79 years of age, of Holdrege, passed away on Thursday, January 26, 2012 at the Phelps Memorial Health Center in Holdrege. Dean was born October 29, 1932 on a farm north of Huntley, Nebraska, the 4th of 7 children born to Elmer E. and Faye (Schroder) Berry. He received his education at Ragan High School, graduating with the class of 1950.

Dean was united in marriage to Kay Janeen Gorman on April 20, 1952 and to this union three children were born: Rodney, Sheryl, and Kim. The Berry’s made their residence in Holdrege, where Dean worked as the maintenance supervisor for the Department of Roads. In December of 2004, Dean retired after 44 years.

Dean was a member of the Holdrege Volunteer Fire Department from 1959 -1986 and the Holdrege Rescue Squad from 1971-1986 where he was named the Unit Captain from 1978-1979, he was also a member of the Holdrege Elks, Holdrege Area Jaycees, the Phelps County Election Board for 8 years, and a member of the Holdrege Bethel Lutheran Church. In his spare time, Dean enjoyed renovating houses for rent, keeping a nice yard, enjoyed all sports, and loved spending time with his kids and grandkids.

Besides his parents, Dean was preceded in death by his wife, Kay on June 7, 2007; one sister, Detta Duval; brother, Den Berry and son-in-law, Kenny Olson.

He is survived by his three children: Rodney Berry and his wife, Maxine of Loomis, Nebraska, Sheryl Olson of Holdrege and Kim Berry and his wife, Jill of Westchester, Ohio; seven grandchildren: Nicole Mattson and her husband, Aaron, Camela Houston, and her husband, Brian, Allison Perry and her husband, Adam, Brent Olson, Angie Olson, Chelsea Berry and Derek Berry; five great-grandchildren: Aidan and Addison Perry, Olivia and Naomi Mattson, and Colt Houston; two brothers: Don Berry and his wife, LuEtta of Holdrege and Delmer Berry and his wife, Janet of Bertrand, Nebraska; two sisters: Doris Schriner and her husband, Ed of Holdrege, Diane Sell and her husband, Jim of Holdrege; one brother-in-law, Larry Duval of Holdrege; two sisters-in-law: Judy Berry of Illinois, Marlys Brand and her husband, Dale of Holdrege; special friend, Dianna Isaacson of Holdrege; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Visitation will be held on Monday, January 30, 2012 at the Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Holdrege from 1:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. with the family greeting from 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.

A memorial has been established in his memory and will be designated at a later date.
