Memorial Services for Verda M. Englund will be conducted from the Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Holdrege, Nebraska on Thursday, March 15, 2012 at 10:30 a.m. with Reverend Kenton Birtell officiating. Interment will be at Prairie Home Cemetery in Holdrege. Verda Magdalena Englund, 94 years of age, of Lexingon, Nebraska, (formerly of Holdrege) passed away on Sunday, March 11, 2012 at the Plum Creek Care Center in Lexington. Verda was born on August 31, 1917 in Bertrand, Nebraska, second of four children born to Harry and Anna (Gerdau) Schult.
Verda received her education at Bertrand, graduating from Bertrand High School with the class of 1937. She then pursued higher education at the Kearney State Teachers College, where she received her teaching credentials. She was employed as a rural school teacher for 4 years.
On August 31, 1941 she was united in marriage to Melvin A. Englund and to this union two sons were born: Melvin Leroy and Richard Duane.
The family lived in Holdrege, where they farmed until their retirement. Verda also worked as a Nurses Aid and Monitor for Methodist Memorial Homes in Holdrege for 11 years. On December 23, 1999, she was preceded in death, by her husband, Melvin, Sr.
Verda attended the Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church, where she was active in Bible Studies. She was also involved in extension clubs, birthday clubs, and the Martha Society.
Besides her parents and her husband, Melvin, Sr., she was preceded in death by her sister, Dorothy Priel and brother, Leonard A. Schult.
She is survived by her two sons: Melvin Englund, Jr. and his wife, Linda of Kearney, Nebraska, Richard Englund and his wife, Doreen of Doniphan, Nebraska; five grandchildren, along with great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and extended family.
A memorial has been established and kindly suggested to Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church or Asera Care Hospice.
There will be no visitation as the family is honoring her wish for cremation.
