Berniece Maxine McQuiston

Funeral Services for Berniece M. McQuiston will be conducted from the United Methodist Church in Oxford, Nebraska on Monday, March 19, 2012 at 10:30 a.m. with Reverend Eldon E. Fablinger officiating. Interment will be at the Oxford Cemetery.

Berniece Maxine McQuiston, 85 years of age, of Oxford, passed away on Thursday, March 15, 2012 at the Harvard Rest Haven in Harvard, Nebraska. She was born on April 13, 1926 on the family farm northwest of Orleans in Harlan County, Nebraska, the 4th of 11 children born to Carl and Clara (Hoppe) Broeker. She received her primary education from District #35, known as the Carter School and then graduated from Mascot High School with the class of 1943.

On February 24, 1946 she was united in marriage to Rolland William McQuiston and to this union nine children were born: Barbara, Beverly, Michael, Pauline, Delores, David, Kaye, Debra and Mark. The family made their home in the Mascot area. She was a devoted homemaker and assisted her husband with the family turkey farm. Berniece was a dedicated wife, loving mother and grandmother, caring sister and a devoted friend to many. Rolland passed away on May 9, 1999.

Berniece was a 50+ year member of the United Methodist Church in Oxford, where she taught Sunday school for many years. She enjoyed her years of membership with the Extension Club and was a 4-H Leader. She loved all of God’s creation; she especially had a special place in her heart for animals and always enjoyed the pure beauty of flowers.

In her spare time, Berniece enjoyed knitting, crocheting, sewing, reading, flower gardening and taking walks.

Besides her parents and husband, Rolland, she was preceded in death by her two sisters: Louise Broeker in infancy, Marjorie Dyas and her husband, Dick; three brothers: Kenneth “Bud” Broeker, Robert Broeker and Oral Broeker and his wife, Pearl; four brothers-in-law: Stanley Langenberg, Harold Brown, Jr., Milton Thulin, and Doug York; and one son-in-law, Dennis Schulz.

She is survived by her nine children: Michael McQuiston of Orleans, David McQuiston and his wife, Kathy of Oxford, Mark McQuiston of Oxford, Barbara Salyers and her husband, Mike of Harvard, Beverly Stafford and her husband, Don of Lakewood, Colorado, Pauline Harper and her husband, Warren of Holbrook, Nebraska, Delores Scheumann and her husband, Don of Carthage, Indiana, Kaye Blincow and her husband, Ron of Nixa, Missouri, and Debra Mostek and her husband, Mike of Omaha; 21 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; four sisters: Phyllis Thulin of Oxford, Ardis Proctor and her husband, Carl of Oxford, Carla Freeberg and her husband, Laval of Holdrege, Janice Maaske and her husband, Darrel of Loomis; one brother: Wallace Broeker and his wife, Ortha of Orleans; two sisters-in-law: LoRee Broeker of Oxford and Donna (Broeker) Dallman and her husband, Myron of Macon, Nebraska; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, March 18, 2012 from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Mitchell-Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Oxford with the family greeting from 1:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

A memorial has been established in her memory and kindly suggested to the Oxford Senior Center or the Oxford Rescue Unit.
