Memorial Services for Carl Gustafson will be conducted from the Fridhem Lutheran Church in Funk, Nebraska on Tuesday, March 20, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. with Reverend Darrel Wissmann, officiating. Prior to the services a private family interment will be in the Fridhem Cemetery at Funk.

Carl A. A. Gustafson, 80 years of age, of Funk, passed away on Friday, March 16, 2012 at the Holdrege Memorial Homes. Carl was born February 24, 1932 on the family farm northeast of Funk in Phelps County, the youngest of two sons born to Elmer S. A. and Anna Pauline (Haraldson) Gustafson. He received his primary education at Phelps County District #7 and graduated from Axtell High School with the class of 1949. He then attended college at Luther College in Wahoo, Nebraska and Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois, where he received his Bachelors of Science Degree in Education. He was inducted into the U.S. Army on January 20, 1954 and served his country until his honorable discharge on January 5, 1956.

On March 25, 1956, Carl was united in marriage to Deloris Johnson at Crooks, South Dakota and to this union three sons were born: Bryan, Steven and Jon. Following his education, Carl taught school for six years; one year in Elwood, Nebraska and five years in Bertrand, Nebraska. He then engaged in farming in Phelps County near Funk until his retirement.

Carl was an avid fan and faithfully followed his grandchildren’s activities. He was a member of the Fridhem Lutheran Church, where he was active on the church board and involved in other capacities. Carl also served on the Board of Directors of the Phelps County Community Foundation, on the Axtell Board of Education, was a member of the V.F.W. in Axtell and member of the Funk Lions Club. Carl also enjoyed being a part of the Axtell Oratorial Society, and sang The Messiah with the choir for many years.

Besides his parents, Carl was preceded in death by one brother, Harold Gustafson.

He leaves to mourn his passing his wife, Deloris of almost 56 years; three sons: Bryan Gustafson and his wife, Michelle of Omaha, Nebraska, Steven Gustafson and his wife, Susan of Holdrege, Jon Gustafson and his wife, Teresa of Maryville, Missouri; eight grandchildren: Cara Gustafson of New Haven, Connecticut, Jared Gustafson of Omaha; Casey Sexton and her husband, Matt of Omaha, Eric Gustafson and his fiancé, Ashley Chamberlain of Axtell, Weston Gustafson of Holdrege; Jack Macias, Cade Gustafson and Marc Gustafson all of Maryville; four sisters-in-law: Geraldine Gustafson of Funk, Janet Johnson of Crooks, Marian Johnson of Seattle, Washington and Estelle Johnson of Whidbey Island, Washington; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Visitation will be held on Monday, March 19, 2012 at the Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Holdrege from 1:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. with the family greeting from 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. A memorial has been established in his memory and kindly suggested to the Fridhem Lutheran Church, the Phelps County Pantry or the Safe Center – serving Phelps County.
