Luella Epping, 91 years of age, of Funk, passed away following a brief illness on Friday, June 22, 2012 at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney, Nebraska. She was born on March 21, 1921 on the family farm northeast of Loomis in Phelps County, Nebraska, the fourth of five children born to Reno F. and Emma (Jacobson) Freburg. Luella received her primary education from a rural school in Phelps County and graduated from Holdrege High School with the class of 1938. Luella then attended the Kearney Normal School, where she received her teaching credentials. During WWII, Luella was employed by Douglas Aircraft in Santa Barbara, California. On December 15, 1948 Luella was united in marriage to Bennie William “Ben” Epping and to this union four children were born: Rodney, Elizabeth, Beverly and Donna. Following their marriage, Luella and Ben attended the Biola Bible College in Los Angeles, California. The family made their home on a farm north of Holdrege until purchasing a farm on the north edge of Funk in 1955. This is where Ben and Luella raised their family and worked side-by-side until their retirement in 1978. On May 8, 1982 Luella was preceded in death by her husband, Ben. Luella continued to reside on the farm until 2006, when she began to reside with her son, Rod and his wife, Grace.
Luella was a longtime member of the Fridhem Lutheran Church in Funk.
She enjoyed tending to her flower garden, loved to travel, and most of all was an avid reader, especially her Bible. Her faith was paramount in her life; she was saved at an early age and passed the importance of Faith in God to her family.
Besides her parents and husband, Ben, she was preceded in death by three brothers: Raymond in infancy and Chester and Lloyd Freburg; and one sister, Gladys Bonfoey.
Luella leaves to mourn her passing her son, Rodney Epping and his wife, Grace of Funk, three daughters: Elizabeth Epping of Holdrege, Beverly Driscoll and her husband, Jeff of Kearney, Donna Epping of Holdrege; eight grandchildren: Chris Epping and his wife, Maureen, Matt Epping, Becky Govier and her husband, Logan, Debbie Epping, Sarah Epping, Michael Epping, John Driscoll, and Kelsey Driscoll; one great-grandson, Mason Govier; her lifelong friend, Evangeline Carlson of Winfield, Kansas and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Visitation will be held on Monday, June 25, 2012 from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with the family greeting friends from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Holdrege. A memorial has been established in her memory and kindly suggested to the Funk First Responders.
