Memorial Services for Esther C. Hall will be conducted from the Hope Lutheran Church in rural Smithfield, Nebraska on Monday, March 4, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. with Reverend Tim Glendening officiating. Private family inurnment will be in the Highland Cemetery at Bertrand, Nebraska prior to the memorial service.

Esther Catherine (Brand) Hall, 98 years of age, of Bertrand, passed away on Thursday, February 21, 2013 at the Phelps Memorial Health Center in Holdrege, Nebraska. Esther was born June 25, 1914 on the family farm east of Smithfield in Gosper County, Nebraska, the eldest of six children born to Herman F. and Margaret C. (Brooks) Brand. She was baptized at the Christian Church in Elwood, Nebraska. She received her primary education from Gosper County District #64 and then graduated from Smithfield High School with the class of 1932.

Following her education, Esther relocated to Wyoming for two years and provided babysitting for her Aunt. Esther’s mother then became ill and subsequently passed away when Esther was 20 years of age. Esther then assisted her father with the care of her three brothers and two younger sisters for the next 12 years. She also provided domestic duties for area families in Bertrand. On February 15, 1942 she was united in marriage to Gus Henry Hall and to this union three children were born: Jack, Ronald, and Bonnie. The family continued to make their home in Bertrand. In the years to come, Esther was employed by Artistic Woven Labels, Progress Livestock, mowed lawns in the Bertrand area, and then became the caregiver of the family again when her husband, Gus’ health failed. Gus passed away in January on 1994.

Esther continued to reside in her home in Bertrand until her failing health, when she began to make her home at the Bertrand Nursing Home in 2011.

Esther enjoyed traveling throughout the United States, tending to her roses and mums, loved to read, and enjoyed writing poems, letters, and her life history. Esther was a member of the Hope Lutheran Church in rural Smithfield since 1949, where she served on various committees, involved with the Women’s Circle Group and volunteered cleaning the church.

Besides her husband, Gus; Esther was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers: Roy, Leon, and Delmer Brand; one sister, Ethel Ebmeier; son-in-law, Eliud Ruybalid; one grandson, John Garrison; great-grandson, Isaac Hall and great great-grandson, Ian Fay.

Esther is survived by her two sons: Jack Hall and his wife, Janet of Arizona City, Arizona, Ronald Hall and his wife, Candice of Omaha, Nebraska; one daughter, Bonnie Ruybalid of Holdrege; four grandchildren: Kevin Hall and his wife, Missy, Catherine Schaefer and her husband, Adam, Travis Hall and his wife, Carla and Tracy Hall and her special friend, Steven; four step-grandchildren: Shelly Ruybalid, Lyle Ruybalid, Sherri Laverack and Ray Ruybalid and his wife, Karla; six great-grandchildren; six step-great-grandchildren; three great great-grandchildren; one sister, Fern Wells of Cozad, Nebraska; two sisters-in-law: Jean Brand of Bertrand and Carmen Brand of Ogallala, Nebraska and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

There will be no visitation, the family is honoring Esther’s wish for cremation.

A memorial has been established in Esther’s honor and will be designated at a later date.
