Funeral Services for Melvin I. Rupke will be conducted on Monday, December 16, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. at the Peace Lutheran Church in Alma, Nebraska with Pastor Paul Ferrarone officiating. Interment will be in the Alma Cemetery with Military Honors provided by the Faye Cady American Legion Post # 118 in conjunction with the Nebraska Army Military Honors Team.
Melvin Ira Rupke, 97 years of age, of Alma passed away on Wednesday, December 11, 2013 at the Good Samaritan Society Colonial Villa in Alma. Melvin was born on July 6, 1916 in Long Island, Kansas the fourth of eleven children born to William and Hattie (Konjer) Rupke. He attended school in Long Island graduating from Long Island High School with the class of 1935.
Melvin and his brothers started Rupke Brothers Windmill Service in Phillipsburg, Kansas in the 1930s.
On April 13, 1942, Melvin was inducted into the United States Army at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas and served during World War II. He was stationed in Brisbane, Australia. On November 11, 1944, Melvin was honorably discharged.
On March 17, 1952, he married Mae Virginia Brown at the Dutch Reform Church parsonage in Prairie View, Kansas and they were blessed with four children: Debra Elaine, Doyle Alan, Arlo Gale and Twila Jean.
Melvin worked as the Post Master in Prairie View, Kansas, starting in 1945 and retiring in 1972. Melvin also worked as the manager of the Prairie View Telephone Company, starting in 1961. The family then moved to Alma where he was employed at Colonial Villa Nursing Home in Alma until his retirement in 1979.
He was a member of the Free Methodist Church of Alma and the American Legion in Oxford, Nebraska.
Melvin enjoyed spending time with his family, fishing and doing crafts. Melvin also enjoyed going to auctions.
Besides his parents, Melvin was preceded in death by his wife, Mae in 2009; brothers, Henry Rupke, Ivan Rupke, Richard Rupke and Clarence Rupke; brothers-in-law: Lenn Bailey, Dean Tracy, LeRoy Donnelly and Clarence DeWild; sisters-in-law: Lucille Rupke and Weona Rupke; son-in-law, Michael Zerr, Jr.; and one grandson, Austin James Rupke.
He is survived by his sons: Doyle Rupke and his friend, Deborah of Lenora, Kansas, Arlo Rupke and his wife, Brenda of Stockton, Missouri; daughters: Debra Zerr-Florom and her husband, Dan of Alma, Twila Hays and her husband, Steven of Orleans, Nebraska; nine grandchildren: Jeffrey Zerr and his wife, Kayla of Heartwell, Nebraska, Mark Florom of Heartwell, Michelle Zerr-Guglielmi of Alma, Jennifer Rupke of Alma, Haleigh Rupke of Fairplay, Missouri, Christina Cox and her husband, Byron of Kearney, Nebraska, Daniel Hays stationed in Belle Chasse, Louisiana, Emily Hays and her fiancé, Allen Levesque of Omaha, Nebraska and Bradley Hays of Aurora, Nebraska; great-grandchildren: Devin Zerr, Ashlyn Zerr, Jocelyn Zerr, Becky Cox and Tara Hays; brothers: Wilbur Rupke and his wife, Joan of Lexington, Nebraska, Hank Rupke and his wife, Bert of Lakin, Kansas; sisters: Hendrene Bailey of Newton, Kansas, Josephine DeWild of McPherson, Kansas, Juanita Tracy of Phillipsburg, Kansas and Irene Donnelly of Portland, Oregon; along with many nieces, nephews, extended family members and a host of friends.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, December 15, 2013 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with the family greeting from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Bauer-Torrey & Mach Funeral Home in Alma.
A memorial has been established in Melvin’s honor and will be designated at a later date.
