Agnes Matta Bertha Langenberg, 94 years of age, of Holdrege, passed away on Tuesday, February 16, 2016 at the Holdrege Memorial Homes. She was born December 7, 1921 in Becker County, Minnesota, the tenth of thirteen children born to Henry Hermann and Dora Maria (Kohler) Langenberg. At the age of one year the family moved to a farm near Atlanta, Nebraska.
Agnes was baptized at the age of one year at the Hope Lutheran Church in rural Smithfield, Nebraska. She was confirmed on May 21, 1939 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Bertrand and later transferred her membership to Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Holdrege in 1976.
She attended Upland School District #63 for five years until the family moved to a farm in Phelps County, Nebraska, near the Rockfalls Township, where she attended the West Sunnyside School District #1.
Agnes lived thirty-three years in the Rockfalls Township and for ten years on a farm known as Rockfalls. She enjoyed farm life and spent those years sharing farm work with family which included: raising and milking cows, fixing fences and caring for baby chicks and laying hens. In later years, Agnes and her sister, Dorothy cared for their parents and had the responsibility of the farm. They continued to farm until the Fall of 1966, when they sold the farm and moved to Holdrege.
On October 13, 1966, Agnes started working at Methodist Memorial Homes as a Nurse's Aide. Agnes and Dorothy worked the same shift together for twenty years at Methodist Memorial Homes until retiring on January 4, 1987.
After retiring, she and Dorothy made hand-quilted quilts to sell or give to family and friends as gifts. Agnes loved to help ladies tie quilts, she also enjoyed crocheting capes, afghans, stuffed toys and canvas work.
Agnes and her sister, Dorothy lived together for 84 years, where they cared for each other and spent countless hours forming memories that will never be forgotten. On June 9, 2011, the two sisters began to make their home at Holdrege Memorial.
Besides her parents, Agnes was preceded in death by her brothers: Harold, Irvin, Albert, Henry Jr. and Lester Langenberg; her sisters: Clara Michel, Anna Ebmeier, Laura Johnson and Helen Michel; in addition a sister and brother died in infancy; and several sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law and nieces and nephews also preceded her in death.
She leaves to celebrate her life; her sister and long-time companion, Dorothy Langenberg of Holdrege; sister-in-law, Marie Langenberg of Lincoln, Nebraska; and host of many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
