Funeral Services for Aletha M. Freburg will be held on Monday, November 15, 2010 at 10:30 a.m. at the Evangelical Free Church in Loomis, Nebraska with Reverend Tom Thompson and Mr. Wayne Carlson, officiating. Interment will be held at Sandstrom Cemetery in rural Phelps County, Nebraska. Military Honors will be conducted by the Loomis/Bertrand Veteran's Organization in conjunction with the U.S. Army National Guard Military Honors Team.

Aletha Mae Freburg, 89 years of age, of Holdrege, Nebraska (formerly of Loomis), passed away on Thursday, November 11, 2010 at the Christian Homes Care Community in Holdrege. She was born on August 1, 1921 on the family farm north of Orleans in Harlan County, Nebraska, the second of four children born to LaSalle Harold and Martena Julianna (Christensen) Whitehead. She received her primary education from District #44 in Harlan County and then graduated from Mascot High School. Aletha then pursued higher education for her pre-nursing credentials from the Kearney Normal School and then graduated from Mary Lanning School of Nursing in Hastings, Nebraska in 1943.

Following her education, she volunteered with the United States Army Nursing Corps and later served in an official capacity when she was inducted on April 21, 1944 and served her country in Central Europe during WW II as an Army nurse until her honorable discharge on March 15, 1946 with the rank of 1st Lieutenant. Following her service, Aletha worked as a registered nurse at the Brewster Hospital in Holdrege.

On December 20, 1947 she was united in marriage to Carl John Victor Freburg at the Westmark Evangelical Free Church parsonage and to this union four children were born: Diane, Mark, Timothy and Dann. They made their home in Holdrege, in the Westmark Community and in Denver, Colorado before moving to the farm west of Loomis in 1963. In February of 1996, Aletha and Carl moved into Holdrege. She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl on May 26, 2001.

Aletha was a member of the Evangelical Free Church in Loomis, where she served in many capacities including: W.M.S. (Women's Missionary Society), served on the church board, taught Sunday school, involved in bible study, and active with Pioneer Girls. She was also a member of the American Legion Post #338 in Loomis, the American Legion Auxiliary and joined the George R. Mitchell Post #1365 of the V.F.W. in 1980. She also volunteered with the Blood Mobile for many years and enjoyed her activity with the Mary Lanning Nursing Alumni Association.

She loved attending her children's and grandchildren's activities as they were growing up.

Besides her parents and husband, Carl, Aletha was preceded in death by one son, Timothy John at birth; one brother, Harold Whitehead and his wife, LaVeva; one sister, Mildred Meier and her husband, Victor; brother-in-law, Frank Hoxmeier; and sisters-in-law: Lucille Peterson and her husband, John, Vernie McKee and her husband, J.R., Ruby Houchens and her husband, Charles, and Ruth Johnson and her husband, Carl.

She leaves to mourn her passing one daughter, Diane Jones and her husband, Robert of Omaha, Nebraska; two sons: Mark Freburg and his wife, Julie of Holdrege and Dann Freburg and his wife, Patty of Holdrege; four grandchildren: Todd and Carlyn Jones of Omaha, Tim Freburg of Lincoln, Nebraska and Alex Freburg of Holdrege; sister, Margery Hoxmeier of Orleans, Nebraska and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, November 14, 2010 from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. with the family greeting friends from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Holdrege.

A memorial has been established in her name and will be designated at a later date.
