Funeral Services for Alvin "Tony" Harms will be conducted from the Bethel Lutheran Church in Holdrege, Nebraska on Wednesday, April 18, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. with Chaplain DeWane Dow and Mr. Wayne Carlson officiating. Interment will be held in the Prairie Home Cemetery at Holdrege.
Alvin "Tony" Harms, 91 years of age, of Holdrege, passed away on Saturday, April 14, 2012 at the Christian Homes Care Community at Holdrege. Tony was born December 24, 1920 on the family farm five miles south of Wilcox in Franklin County, Nebraska, the fourth of seven children of Ehme and Ollie (Schmidt) Harms. He received his education from the Sunny Plains Rural School District #75 in Harlan County, Nebraska. He was baptized as an infant and confirmed at the St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hildreth, Nebraska.
He grew up on a farm south of Wilcox. He was employed by Albert Frisell and other area farmers prior to farming and owning his own land.
On November 29, 1944 he was united in marriage to Virginia Rose Murphy and to this union two sons and one daughter was born: Virgil, Betsy and Richard. The couple made their home north of Ragan, Nebraska, where he continued to farm and enjoyed his passion of caring for livestock. Tony and Virginia attended the Bethel Lutheran Church.
Tony is survived by his wife, Virginia of Holdrege; two sons: Virgil Harms and his wife, Pat of Blue Springs, Nebraska and Rick Harms and his wife, Lynne of Omaha, Nebraska; one daughter, Betsy Bendorf and her husband, Ken of Holdrege; six grandchildren: Susan Ruff and her husband, Jim of Gretna, Nebraska, Cindi Dubas and her husband, Mike of York, Nebraska, Crystal Oberg and her husband, Tom of Farnam, Nebraska, Kyle Bendorf and his wife, Sherry of Clearwater, Florida, Beth Wagner and her husband, Paul of Papillion, Nebraska and Kirk Harms of Kearney, Nebraska; ten great-grandchildren; sister, Dora Mae Sundquist and her husband, Leroy of Holdrege; sisters-in-law: Louise Harms and Mary Jo Harms both of Wilcox, Nebraska and Evelyn Harms of Holdrege and Gracia Harms of Waverly, Iowa and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers: Albert, William, Raymond and Emil Harms; one sister, Dorothy Woollen and her husband, William.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, April 17, 2012 from 1:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. with the family greeting friends from 5:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. at the Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Holdrege.
A memorial has been established in his memory and will be designated at a later date.
