Alvin Roy Snyder was born the second of five children to Roy Leslie Snyder and Loretta Marie (Hoppe) Snyder on May 20th 1929 on the farm north and west of Alma, Ne.
Alvin attended school from 1st grade - 6th grade at Bear Rural School District 6, north and west of Alma. He then attended and graduated from Huntley High School in 1947. He worked on the family farm with his father and brothers until entering the Army in July of 1951- July 1953. After his army service in Korea, he returned to the farm for several years and later helped build houses in Holdrege and Kearney working for Kingsley Lumber. He returned to the farm in 1957 where he resided until his marriage in 1973 and retiring from farming in 1997.
On March 17th, 1973 he married Doris (Roos) Dunn. She preceded him in death on December 10th 2006. On August 30th, 2008 Alvin married Myrene (Schroder) Ulrichson. Myrene passed away on January 18, 2022.
After retiring from farming, Alvin and Doris spent 11 winters in Arizona and summers camping all over the country. They were also members of several camping groups. Alvin continued camping with Myrene during the summers and living in Alma. Having farming in his blood, Alvin usually had a large garden filled with tomatoes that he shared with family and friends.
Alvin was involved with the Fay Cady American Legion Post 118 in Alma and BPO Elks 2062 in Holdrege, he served on the Alma Coop Board, Alma Township Board, Farm Bureau Board, and was a member of the Huntley United Methodist Church.
In November of 2022 Alvin moved to Hillcrest Terrace Assisted Living in Alma. He moved to the Garden County Nursing Home in August of 2024 to be closer to his step-daughter, Cathy Blum.
Alvin had no biological children, but with his two marriages he became the patriarch of a large family: five step-children: LeAnna (Dunn) Lentz, (James), and Ron Dunn , Lee Ulrichson (Nancy), Cathy Ulrichson Blum, (John), Robert Ulrichson, (Kris); ten grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandbabies. Alvin was always entertained by watching and playing with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Alvin was preceded in death by his parents, Roy in 1981 and Loretta Snyder in 1996, brothers, Warren Snyder and wife Mary, Laverne Snyder and wife Yvonne, sister Doris Hines-Howey and husbands, Loren and Robert; brother-in-la, James Bathgate and step-son, Lee Ulrichson.
Those who remain to honor his memory include: Sister: Leola Snyder Bathgate who lives in Greensboro, NC with her oldest daughter. Stepchildren, Leanna (Dunn) Lentz (James) and Ron Dunn of NorthRichland Texas, Cathy (Ulrichson) Blum (John) of Oshkosh Ne, Robert Ulrichson (Kris) of Lufkin TX. Nancy Ulrichson, Alma, Ne. Many grandchildren, great grandchildren and great grands as well as many nieces and nephews.
A private family graveside service will be held at a later date. His plans included being buried at Ft. McPherson National Cemetery in Maxwell Ne.
There will be no viewing or visitation. The family is honoring Alvin's wish for cremation.
Memorials are suggested to the Harlan County Senior Center.
