Memorial GravesideServices for Bennie L. King will be held at the Roselawn Cemetery at Columbus, Nebraska, on Monday, March 21, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. with Reverend Murry Johnston officiating. Military Honors will be provided by the Silver Creek American Legion Post #263 in conjunction with the United States Army Military Honors Team.
Bennie Lloyd King was born one of eight children to John King and Annie (Kirkland) King on March 30, 1918 in Carson, Mississippi. He left this life Tuesday, March 8, 2016 at Christian Homes Care Community in Holdrege, Nebraska at the age of 97 years, 11 months, and 8 days.
Bennie served in the Army Air Force from 1941-1946. He served in the Asiatic Pacific Theater in Calcutta, India. His service earned him the Asiatic Pacific Theater Medal, American Defense Service Medal, the American Theater Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, along with the World War II Victory Medal. He belonged to the Silver Creek American Legion Post #263.
On July 20, 1944 Bennie married Angeline "Angie" Wilhelmina Engel in Wellington, Kansas. After his discharge from the service on February 14, 1946, Bennie and Angie moved to Silver Creek, Nebraska where he served as Mayor.
After owning his own auto repair shop in Silver Creek, Bennie went to work for Grosch Irrigation in Silver Creek. He later worked for Behlens Manufacturing in Columbus until his retirement. They resided in Silver Creek until 1999 when they relocated to Alma, Nebraska. They celebrated 67 years of marriage, until her death in August of 2011.
Bennie was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Angie; four brothers: Frank King, George King, Claudie King and James King; two sisters Maggie Polk and Myrtle Polk; and one great-grandson, M.J. Spahn.
Mr. King is survived by, his sons: Lynn King and his wife, Sharon of Northglenn, Colorado and Roger King and his wife, Cindi of Alma; seven grandchildren: Scott King and his wife Amanda, Traci Heavican and her husband Clay, Kristi Lewton and her husband Stacey, Janelle Spahn and her husband Michael, Jill King, Heather King and Ben King; 19 great-grandchildren; one sister, Pauline (Polly) Lundy of Prentiss, Mississippi; one brother, Maxie King of Mississippi; along with numerous other family members and friends.
A memorial has been established in Bennie's honor and will be designated at a later date.
