Memorial Services for Bernadine A. Renken will be conducted from the Hope Lutheran Church near Smithfield, Nebraska, on Saturday, May 30, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. with Reverend Cathi Braasch, officiating. Private inurnment will be held in the Hope Lutheran Cemetery.

Bernadine Aurora (Lilyhorn) Renken, 82 years of age, of rural Smithfield, was surrounded by her family as she entered into eternal life on Friday, May 22, 2009 at Bryan LGH-East Hospital in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Bernadine was born June 13, 1926, on her family's farm northeast of Funk, Nebraska, the second of four siblings in Bernard "Jim" and Luella (Markward) Lilyhorn's family. She grew up on the family farm and graduated from Bertrand High School in 1943. Following high school, she taught in rural, all-grade school for 3 years before attending Nebraska State Teacher's College, Kearney, Nebraska.

Bernadine married William H. "Bill" Renken on a rainy September 24, 1955. They raised their four children: Ralph, Rodney, Russell, and Wilma on the farm northwest of Bertrand. Bernadine enjoyed all aspects of farm life: sewing and housework plus driving grain trucks, hauling fertilizer and bringing hot meals to the men in the field. She loved fishing and family vacations. Bernadine lived out her life on the farm.

Bernadine was preceded in death by her husband, Bill; her son, Ralph; her brothers: Daryl Liljehorn and Gary Lilyhorn and a sister, Mary Fay who died in infancy.

Bernadine is survived by her sons: Rodney Renken of Bertrand and Russell Renken of Ewa Beach, Hawaii; daughter, Wilma Renken of Willcox, Arizona; grandson, William Renken of Charleston, South Carolina; granddaughter, Rachael Renken of Charleston, and sister, Sally Johnson of Holdrege, Nebraska. Additionally, she is survived by a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Memorial book signing will be held on Friday, May 29, 2009 from 1:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. at the Sandstrom Funeral Home in Bertrand.

A memorial for the Hope Lutheran Church will be established in Bernadine's memory.
