Celebration of Life Service for Bernard G. Liljehorn will be held on Wednesday, October 24, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. at the Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Holdrege, Nebraska with Mr. Dave Thorell, officiating. Interment will be held at the Prairie Home Cemetery at Holdrege with military honors provided by the Martin-Horn American Legion Post #66 in conjunction with the United States Marine Corps Honors Team. Firefighter last call honors will also be provided by the Funk Volunteer Fire Department.
Bernard Gary Liljehorn, 68 years of age, of Minden, Nebraska (formerly of Funk, Nebraska) passed away on Wednesday, October 17, 2018 at the Bethany Home in Minden. Bernard was born November 28, 1949 at Minden, Nebraska, the second of four children to Daryl and Jane (White) Liljehorn. Bernard received his education from Axtell Community School, graduating from Axtell High School with the class of 1969.
Following his education, Bernard served his country in the United States Marine Corps, during the Vietnam War from December 1, 1969 until his honorable discharge on November 30, 1971.
Bernard was united in marriage to Linda Lou Nitchie on April 25, 1971 at Funk, and to this union three children were born: Tina Marie, Jeanette Louise, and Kurt Gary. The family made their home in Funk, where Bernard was employed by CPI CO-OP for 34 years until his retirement in 2005. After his retirement, Bernard continued to drive truck until his health began to fail. Bernard was also a dedicated member of the Funk Volunteer Fire Department since 1971, and served as Fire Chief for 25 years from 1979 – 2004. On December 23, 2003, he was preceded in death by his wife, Linda Lou. In the years to come, Bernard was blessed by a special relationship in his life with Jane Francis of Holdrege. They enjoyed blending two families into one.
In his spare time, Bernard enjoyed fishing, dancing, boating, board games, playing cards, and spoiling his dog, Stretch. Above all, the time he spent with his family was treasured.
Besides his wife, Linda Lou; Bernard was preceded in death by his father, Daryl; his sister, Linda Mae Hendrickson and her husband, Paul; and sister-in-law, Carol Liljehorn.
Bernard leaves to celebrate his life; his long-time companion, Jane Francis of rural Holdrege; his mother, Jane Liljehorn of Holdrege; his three children: Tina Silvers and her husband, Tom of Funk; Jeanette Berkeypile of Minden; and Kurt Liljehorn and his wife, Tina of Lincoln, Nebraska; five grandchildren: Garrett and Brett Berkeypile; Orion Silvers; Emersyn Liljehorn; and Sage Bouma; Jane's children: Albert Francis and his wife, Kathy of Mead, Colorado; Abraham Francis and his wife, Kayla of Omaha, Nebraska; Amanda Krause and her husband, Jack of Panama City Beach, Florida; Adam Francis and his friend, Kasy Bodfield of Lincoln; and Aaron Francis and his friend, Keisha Everett of Springfield, Missouri; Jane's grandchildren: Gabriel, Kaine, Keira, and Konnor Krause; Leah Francis; Laken Francis; Asher Francis; his brothers: Russell Liljehorn of Kearney, and Roger Liljehorn and his wife, Linda of Holdrege; brothers-in-law: Ronald Nitchie and his wife, Lana of Holdrege; and Robert Nitchie and his wife, Janet of Sargent, Nebraska; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, October 23, 2018 from 4:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. with the family greeting from 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. at the Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Holdrege.
A memorial has been established in Bernard's honor, and kindly suggested to the Funk Volunteer Fire Department; the Alzheimer's Association; or the Parkinson's Foundation.
