A private family funeral service for Bernice A. Harris will be on Thursday, December 21, 2023, at the Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Holdrege, Nebraska with her son-in-law, Rand Burden officiating. Burial will follow at the Prairie Home Cemetery.
Bernice Ann (Krohn) Harris, 95 years of age, of Holdrege, passed away on Sunday, December 17, 2023, surrounded by her family at Phelps Memorial Health Center in Holdrege. Bernice was born March 4, 1928, in Holdrege, the youngest of three children born to Roy and Elsie (Gustafson) Krohn. She grew up on her family's farm north of Holdrege, and attended Avondale District 30 country school through the eighth grade, later graduating from Holdrege High School in 1945. She attended the Charles Denver Beauty School in Denver, Colorado earning her Cosmetology diploma in 1946. Upon returning to Holdrege, Bernice worked at various beauty shops.
After meeting Donald W. Harris at several Big Band dances, they were married on April 17, 1949. To this union four daughters were born: Deborah, Cynthia, Teresa, and Angela. The family lived in: Kearney; Axtell; Nelson; Westminster, Colorado; Loomis; and Holdrege.
Besides being a wife and mother, Bernice was a homemaker who loved serving her family through cooking, baking bread, sewing clothes, and creating birthday and holiday traditions.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald W. Harris, her parents Roy and Elsie Krohn, great-grandchildren: Ryder Schweitzer and Graycen Schweitzer, both in infancy; two brothers: Arnold Krohn; and Quinton Krohn in infancy; her parents-in-law, Paul and Susan Harris; sisters-in-law: Vivian Harris; Jane Jorgenson (Willard); Elizabeth Anderson; and Virginia Harris in infancy; and two nephews: Eldon Krohn in infancy; and Steen Anderson.
Bernice is survived by her four daughters: Debby Chin (Don) of Moscow, Idaho; Cindy David (Larry) of Stromsburg, Nebraska; Terry Fitch (Mike) of Holdrege; Angie Burden (Rand) of Durango, Colorado; seven grandsons: Chad David (Kyla); Brian Chin (Kimberly); Eric Chin (Liz); Mark Chin (Steph); Kevin Chin (Janel); Paul Fitch; Jonathan Burden (Sharayah); five granddaughters: April Schweitzer; Erin Lacy (Jeff); Laree Lindburg (Tyler); Audrey Clement (Casey); Rachel Burden (Garrett); 26 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Eunice Krohn of Holdrege; brother-in-law, Morris Anderson of Stillwater, Minnesota; and a host of nieces, nephews, other family and friends.
There will not be a visitation or memorial book signing.
A memorial has been established in her memory and will be designated at a later date.
