A Memorial Service for Bernard L. "Bernie" Norberg will be held on Tuesday, September 17, 2024 at 2:30 p.m. at the Christian Homes Chapel at Holdrege, Nebraska with Chaplain DeWane Dow officiating.
A private interment will be held prior to the memorial service at the Prairie Home Cemetery in Holdrege.
Bernard LaMont "Bernie" Norberg, 98, of Holdrege, formerly of rural Funk, Nebraska, passed away on Tuesday, September 10, 2024 at Christian Homes Care Community in Holdrege. Bernie was born North of Funk, in Phelps County, Nebraska, on December 17, 1925, the youngest of three sons born to Emmanuel and Dulcie (Eddy) Norberg. The family lived north of Funk and Bernie attended District #26 Country School near Funk and later attended Holdrege Public Schools.
Bernie began helping on the family farm as a young man. He enjoyed his lifelong passion of farming with two-cylinder tractors and later in retirement, he enjoyed restoring those tractors, attending ball games for the grandchildren, and travelling many places.
On March 23, 1948, Bernie was united in marriage to Shirley Jensen in Wilcox, Nebraska. The couple made their home on the family farm, where he was born. They were blessed with four children: Kenneth, Mary L., Eugene, and Barbara.
Bernie was a long-time member of the Emmaus Evangelical Free Church in rural Funk. He served in many capacities including, helping many of the pastors move to their next call, from coast to coast, with his old farm truck.
In his free time, Bernie enjoyed tinkering with and taking his John Deere tractors to parades, and shows, and he loved his German Shepherd Dogs. He will be remembered for doting on his wife, as a hard-working man and providing for his family and parents. Bernie also served on the Board at Christian Homes Care Community.
Bernie was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Kenneth in infancy; two brothers: Orville Norberg at age 12; and Loren Raymond Norberg and wife, Mina Belle; brothers-in-law: Billy J. Jensen and wife, Louise; and Dean Lind.
Bernie leaves to celebrate his life, his wife, of 76 years, Shirley Norberg of Holdrege; his children: Mary Williams and husband, Larry of rural Funk; Eugene Norberg and wife, Micki of rural Funk; and Barbara Vercher and husband, Byron of Pineville, Louisiana; six grandchildren: Brooke Williams of Sunnyvale, California; Phil Williams and wife, Erin of Omaha, Nebraska; Angie Graddy and her husband, Paul of Funk; Carl Norberg of Kearney; Matt Graf and wife, Christina of Sulphur, Louisiana; and Jon Graf of Macon, Georgia; seven great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Mae Lind of Holdrege; along with many extended family members and friends.
Visitation will be held on Monday, September 16, 2024 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with the family greeting friends from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Holdrege.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established in Bernie's honor and strongly suggested to Christian Homes Care Community or Brookstone Home, Health, and Hospice.
