Betty Bee Johnston, 81 years of age, of Loomis, Nebraska, passed away, on September 21, 2023, at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska. Betty was born in Holdrege on February 11, 1942, the first of two children, born to James and Goldie (Gates) Boyd. She grew up in the rural Axtell, Nebraska area and graduated from Axtell High School, with the class of 1960. Betty was baptized at age thirteen in the First Christian Church in Minden, Nebraska.
Following her education, Betty worked as a nurse's aide at the Peterson Hospital in Holdrege for five years.
On November 11, 1962, Betty was united in marriage to Raye D. Johnston at the First Christian Church in Minden, and to this union, two daughters were born: Kimberly Rae and Janet Faye. The couple made their home in Holdrege, Atlanta, Minden, and Loomis.
Betty worked for Grayson Tool and then started at Becton Dickinson in Holdrege and worked there for 24 years until her retirement in February of 2004. She worked part-time at Christian Homes dining room. Her time at Christian Homes was cut short when she was diagnosed with a brain tumor in June of 2008. Through all her hospital stays and surgeries and all life has thrown at her she never complained, and not only that, would work her needs around the others' schedules.
Betty enjoyed puttering in her basement and yard, but best loved spending time with her children and grandchildren. While she was still able to drive, Betty would drive to Wyoming to watch the grandkids at their events. She would travel to Kansas as often as she could to watch her daughter officiate volleyball and softball games. Betty liked to assist with events like baking cookies for bible school and other events and she never wanted recognition for the work she had done.
Betty wishes to express how much her long-time friends have meant to her; Charlene, Darlene, and Marlene (the triplets), Roberta, Mary, Karen, Nancy, Claudia, Barb, Jean, Darlene Schoen, Lois Ring, her fantastic relatives, and most of all her dear beloved family.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, John Boyd; three sisters-in-law: Jean Jakob and her husband David; Lois Martin and her husband Tom; Faye Maaske and her husband Darrell, two brothers-in-law: Neil Johnston and his wife Glenna; Lyle Johnston and his wife Bonnie.
Betty is survived by her husband, Raye Johnston of Loomis; two daughters: Janet Johnston of Salina, Kansas; and Kim Hemmele and her husband, Tony of Loomis; three grandchildren: Hannah, Brian, and Sarah Hemmele all of Holdrege; along with a host of nieces and nephews, other relatives, and many friends.
A visitation will be held on Wednesday, October 11, 2023, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with family greeting friends from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Holdrege.
