Funeral Services for Betty N. Mooney will be conducted from the First United Methodist Church in Holdrege, Nebraska on Friday, November 13, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. with Reverend Dale Lambert, officiating. Interment will be in the Ft. McPherson National Cemetery at Maxwell, Nebraska.
Betty Novita Mooney, 76 years of age, of Holdrege, passed away on Monday, November 9, 2009 at Holdrege Memorial Homes. Betty was born November 30, 1932 at Callaway, Nebraska, the fourth of nine children born to Leonard and Sara (Ball) Tompkin. She received her education from Callaway, graduating from Callaway High School with the class of 1950.
On May 28, 1950 she was united in marriage to Ray Mooney and to this union four children were born: James, Leonard, Novita and Peggy. The family made their home in Callaway and later moved to Holdrege, where Betty was employed by Artistic Woven Labels as a Loom Tender for 17 years until her retirement due to health problems.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday school in her earlier years. Betty was also a member of the Eagle's Auxiliary. She enjoyed life on the farm, especially working side-by-side with Ray. She spent many hours tending to their livestock. During the years that the children were growing up, Betty enjoyed attended their school activities. Most of all she loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved being around people, and will be remembered by the many community members delivering cookies to her many friends around town. On October 26, 2007, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ray. Due to her failing health, Betty began to make her home at Holdrege Memorial Homes in 2002.
She leaves to mourn her passing her two sons: James Mooney and his wife, Lee of Holdrege and Leonard Mooney and his wife, Jane of rural Atlanta, Nebraska; two daughters: Novita Negley and her husband, Doug of Holdrege and Peggy Hickman and her husband, Mike of Minden, Nebraska; eight grandchildren: Jami Knerl and her husband, Jonothan, Matthew Mooney and his wife, Penny, Shannon Pearson, Neil Stewart, Dustin Stewart and his wife, Marci, Torrina Green and her husband, Jerry, Jeremiah Walton and Jessica Walton; eight great-grandchildren: Keison, Alixander, Joleigh, Cameron, Rhett, Hanna, Carly and Jarvis; two brothers: Harold Tompkin and Clifford Tompkin both of Lincoln, Nebraska; sisters-in-law: Carol Dietz and her husband, James of Stamford, Nebraska and Bonnie Mooney of Stromsburg, Nebraska; brothers-in-law: Bob Beisel of Funk, Nebraska and James Grove of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Besides her husband, Ray, she was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers: Clayton, Richard in infancy and Robert Tompkin; three sisters: Annabelle in infancy, Marianne Beisel, and Nyleve Grove; and brother-in-law, Bob Mooney.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, November 12, 2009 at the First United Methodist Church in Holdrege from 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. with the family greeting friends from 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.
A memorial has been established and will be designated at a later date.
