Memorial Services for Betty L. Peterson will be conducted from the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Bertrand, Nebraska on Friday, January 9, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. with Reverend Matt Hacker officiating. Family Inurnment will be held at a later date at the Moses Hill Cemetery in rural Phelps County, Nebraska.

Betty Lou Peterson, 81 years of age, of Bertrand, passed away on Monday, January 5, 2015 at the Bertrand Nursing Home. She was born February 13, 1933 on the family farm near Somerset, Nebraska, the daughter of Warren and Blanche (Louth) Smith. Betty received her primary education from a rural school near Somerset and then from Curtis, Nebraska, graduating from the Nebraska School of Agriculture in Curtis with the class of 1950. She then pursued higher education at the Kearney State Teachers College at Kearney, Nebraska, where she received her Bachelor's Degree in August of 1968 and later in years her Master's Degree in Education. While at Curtis, she met her future husband and on April 19, 1953 she was united in marriage to Harold Edward Peterson and to this union three sons were born: Dennis, David, and John Paul. The family engaged in farming on the family farm north of Bertrand. Betty began her teaching career in rural schools and then continued to teach elementary at the Bertrand Community School until her retirement following 29 years of service. In the spring of 1982, Harold and Betty moved to their present home south of Bertrand. On September 17, 2012 she was preceded in death by her husband, Harold.

She was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Bertrand, where she was involved for many years with the Lutheran Women, she also taught Sunday school and confirmation for many years. Betty and Harold enjoyed camping together in their later years, and just going for an enjoyable drive in the country. They also enjoyed the time spent playing Dominoes with their grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Betty leaves to mourn her passing; her three sons: Dennis Peterson and his wife, Mary, David Peterson and John Paul Peterson and his long-time girlfriend, Chris Walston all of Bertrand; four grandchildren: Seth Peterson and his wife, Angel, Jillian Beard and her husband, Jake, Nathan Peterson and Lucas Peterson; three great-grandchildren: Jana, Gage and Ava Peterson; three sisters: Darlene Whittridge of Saugus, Massachusetts, Phyllis Kaneff of Sacramento, California, and Sharon Jarnagin of Loveland, Colorado; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Besides her parents and husband, Harold she was preceded in death by her brother, Gordon Smith.

There will be no visitation; the family is honoring her wish for cremation.

In Betty's honor a memorial will be established to support of the Bertrand Community School.
