Funeral Services for Carl F. "Putt" Eman will be conducted from the First Baptist Church in Oxford, Nebraska on Monday, October 9, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Dave Hunt, officiating. Following the traditional funeral cremation will take place and a private family inurnment will be in the Oxford Cemetery at a later date.
Carl Franklin Eman, 84 years of age, of Oxford, passed away on Wednesday, October 4, 2006 at the Phelps Memorial Health Center in Holdrege, Nebraska. Carl was born May 15, 1922 at Oxford, one of seven children of Oscar and Bessie (Shields) Eman. He received his education at Oxford, graduating from Oxford High School with the class of 1940. Following his education, Carl was employed by the Burlington Northern Railroad at Oxford, where he worked in the roundhouse repairing locomotive engines. On November 4, 1942, Carl was inducted into the United States Army serving his country during WW II until his honorable discharge on October 19, 1945.
Following his service, he returned to Oxford where Carl enjoyed his passion of playing semi-pro baseball. Through the years, he treasured the many friendship bonds formed playing ball. On August 5, 1951 he was united in marriage to Virginia Flynn and to this union four children were born: Geraldine, Carla, Glenn and Virgil. The family made their home in Oxford, where Carl was employed by the United States Postal Service as Postmaster until his retirement in 1981. Through the years, he was also a janitor at the school, school bus driver, cemetery caretaker, ran the Dairy Queen, managed the swimming pool and coached Legion Baseball. Carl was an avid bowler, pool player, card player and loved to attend sporting events.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church, where he taught Sunday School for several years and involved in the planning and construction of the new church, member of the Tehama Temple Masonic Lodge, charter member of the V.F.W. Post #5437 in Oxford where he held every office through the years, life member of the American Legion Post #219 and held numerous offices with the local and state legions. Carl will be remembered for his good humor, teasing demeanor, loved to watch the trains go through Oxford and was extremely proud to be an American.
He leaves to mourn his passing his wife, Virginia of Oxford; his children: Geraldine Amen and her husband, Terry of Oxford, Carla Bienhoff and her husband, David of Ottawa, Kansas, Glenn Eman and his wife, Rose of Yokosuka, Japan and Virgil Eman and his wife, Mary of Oxford; nine grandchildren: Mike Amen and his wife, Shelly of Hastings, Nebraska, Scott Amen and his wife, Erlinda of Doniphan, Nebraska, Teresa Barnett and her husband, Matt of Elm Creek, Nebraska, Michelle Gorden and her husband, James of Ottawa, Kansas, Kenneth Bienhoff and his fiancé, Heather Taylor of Ottawa, Timothy Eman of Vallejo, California, Anthony Eman of Pensacola, Florida, Kelsie Eman of Oxford and Alex Eman also of Oxford; nine great grandchildren: Evan, Karly, Cole, William, Jennifer, Jonah, Brian, Phoenix and Alyssa; four sisters: Evelyn Braddock of California, Georgia Ludeke of Holdrege, Velma Smith of Arapahoe, Nebraska and Donna Smith of California; sister-in-law, Louise Friedman of Cheyenne, Wyoming and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Harley Eman and his wife, Leora; and a sister in infancy.
Mr. Eman will lie in state at the Mitchell-Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Oxford on Sunday, October 8, 2006 from 1:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. with the family greeting from 4:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.
