Carol S. Hendrickson

Funeral Services for Carol S. Hendrickson will be held on Tuesday, September 20, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Holdrege, Nebraska with Reverend Dr. W. Kirwin Stewart, Jr. officiating. Interment will be held in the Prairie Home Cemetery at Holdrege.

Carol S. Hendrickson, 86 years of age, of Holdrege, passed away on Thursday, September 15, 2016 at the Phelps Memorial Health Center in Holdrege. Carol was born on August 31, 1930 in Tecumseh, Nebraska, the only child born to Herman and Virgie (Bass) Schepman. She attended Tecumseh Public Schools, graduating with the class of 1948. She then pursued higher education at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln, graduating with a Bachelor's Degree in Education.

On June 12, 1952, Carol was married to Bruce C. Hendrickson. She taught school in Beatrice, Nebraska and Sterling, Nebraska, while Bruce was serving in the U.S. Navy. Upon establishing residence in Holdrege, she became a substitute teacher in the Holdrege Public Schools. In later years, Carol was a G.E.D. instructor at the Central Community College in Holdrege and also taught courses in English as a second language.

Carol lived her life caring for others, both individually and in community settings. Some of her past community activities include: president of the Junior Women's Club, secretary of the Crippled Children's Society, chairman of Easter Seals, president and 50 year member of the Chapter H, P.E.O., Phelps Memorial Health Center Service League board and former Scout Den Mother and Camp Fire leader. She also was active with the Meals on Wheels program, a past 4-H leader, life member of the Hospital Auxiliary and Board Member and secretary of the Phelps Memorial Health Center.

Carol served as an active alumnus of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, the University of Nebraska Foundation Trustee, member of the executive board of the University of Nebraska Alumni Association, the University of Nebraska Library Advisory Board, Friend of the Lied Board, member of the President's Advisory Council and was a member of the Alpha Chi Omega sorority. She was also appointed by Governor Kay Orr to the Nebraska Commission for Post-Secondary Education, where she served a term as vice- chairman.

As a long-time member of the First Presbyterian Church, she served selflessly in many capacities. She was an ordained elder, past Sunday school teacher, superintendent of the Bible School, and also served many years in the church school department and the Women's Circle.

When Carol was not volunteering her time, she and Bruce enjoyed their cottage at Johnson Lake. They were active founding members at the Chapel of the Lake. Carol also enjoyed reading, history, knitting, needlepoint, sailing and traveling, but most of all, she loved her time spent with her children and grandchildren.

Carol is survived by her loving husband of 64 years, Bruce Hendrickson of Holdrege; son, Mark Hendrickson and his husband, Daryl of Omaha, Nebraska; daughter, Julie Ford and her two children: Ian and Zachary Ford all of Fremont, Nebraska; and a host of other family members and friends.

Visitation will be held on Monday, September 19, 2016 from 4:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. with the family greeting from 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. at the Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Holdrege.

A memorial has been established in Carol's honor and kindly suggested to the following three non-profits: The First Presbyterian Church of Holdrege; the Carol Hendrickson Memorial Fund at the Phelps County Community Foundation for the benefit of the Holdrege Area Public Library Building or Capital Improvement projects; or the Nebraska Prairie Museum.
