Carol Jean Smith, 61 years of age, of Odessa, Nebraska, (formerly of Holdrege) passed away Saturday, October 14, 2006 at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska. She was born on December 8, 1944 in Edgemont, South Dakota, the eldest of four daughters born to Howard and Wyoma (Sturdivant) Honadel. She attended school in Newcastle, Wyoming, where she graduated with the class of 1963. Carol then pursued higher education at Casper College in Casper, Wyoming.

On November 12, 1966 she was united in marriage to Michael D. Smith in Newcastle and to this union one son was born, Todd. The family made their home in Riverton, Wyoming, where she worked at the Bronco Bar. In 1972, Carol moved back to Newcastle for a short period of time before moving to Holdrege, Nebraska, where she was employed with Becton-Dickinson at the time of her death for over thirty years.

As a young girl she shared many outdoor trips with her father and as a result became such a "Rock Hound" she could never walk through the hills, the woods or the prairie with out stooping over countless times to pick up and examine a rock. Carol was also known for her competitive shooting, as a young woman, she was known at Turkey Shoots for her ability with open sights to consistently place three rounds in a circle the size of a quarter. Carol was quick-witted with a sharp sense of humor, was close to her family and many friends and an avid Husker Football Fan. She especially looked forward to Sunday mornings when she and others in Odessa would meet for a "pot luck" breakfast where they shared food, coffee and good company.

She leaves to mourn her passing her parents, Howard and Wyoma Honadel of Newcastle, Wyoming; son, Todd J. Smith and his wife, Kristi of Hudson, Wyoming; three sisters: Nancy Bock of Gilette, Wyoming, Katherine Jones and her husband, Douglas of Newcastle and Barbara Romero and her husband, Joseph of Albuquerque, New Mexico; grandson, Reeve Todd Smith of Hudson, Wyoming; step-granddaughter, Ashley McDowell of Riverton, Wyoming and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her grandparents: Arthur and Christiana Honadel and Frank and Erma Sturdivant and brother-in-law, Daryl Bock.

There will be no visitation, the family is honoring Carol's wishes for cremation.
