Carrol Dean "Curly" Geer, 85 years of age, of Holdrege, passed away on Friday, December 14, 2012 at the Banner-Baywood Medical Center in Mesa, Arizona. Curly was born December 12, 1927 on a farm south of Atlanta in Harlan County, Nebraska, the youngest of five children born to Burton and Jessie (Borden) Geer. He received his primary education at Atlanta Public School through the first grade, then the family moved to Riverdale, Nebraska where Curly attended school through the fifth grade. His family then returned to Phelps County, where Curly graduated from Holdrege High School with the class of 1945. On October 18, 1948, Curly was inducted into the United States Army, serving his country in Japan with General MacArthur's occupation forces. On September 15, 1951 he was honorably discharged from active duty, yet remained active with the Army Reserves as part of the Nebraska National Guards until he was 60 years of age. He also served as past commander of the Holdrege Unit. On August 27, 1950, Curly was united in marriage to Betty Helen Beyerle at the First Presbyterian Church in North Platte, Nebraska. To this union four children were born: Burton, Tom, Joni and Kelly. Curly began working with his brother-in-law, Wallace Brown picking up eggs and cream from individual farms throughout the area, hauling to the Holdrege Cold Storage. This led to Curly's career in the trucking business, hauling milk from farms to receiving plants. This evolved from milk cans to eventually tank trucks. He owned and operated Rite Way (Milk) Transfer from 1948 until his retirement after 57 years in the business. Curly loved the outdoors, which included hunting and fishing. He enjoyed bowling, gardening, caring for his trees on his property and most of all the time spent with his grandchildren. Curly and Betty enjoyed spending winters together in Apache Junction, Arizona. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Holdrege, where he served as past Deacon and Trustee. Curly was a member of the Martin-Horn American Legion Post #66, the V.F.W., the Holdrege Rotary Club, Milk Hauler Association, the Nebraska Trucking Association, Holdrege Chamber of Commerce, Phelps County Development Corporation, and past member of the Holdrege Jaycee's. He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters: Reva Brown and her husband, Wallace, Retha David and her husband, Everett "Bud", and Louise Penney and her husband, Lee; and one brother, Burton Geer. He leaves to mourn his passing; his wife, Betty of 62 years of Holdrege; three sons: Burton Geer and his wife, Denise of Seattle, Washington, Tom Geer and his wife, Peggy of Omaha, Nebraska and Kelly Geer and his wife, Shari of Holdrege; one daughter, Joni Sell and her husband, Larry of Lake Villa, Illinois; nine grandchildren: Amy Rassman and her husband, Tom, Jason Geer, Rikki Marohl and her husband, Jason, Joey Johnson and her husband, Randy, Shawn Geer, Nicholas Geer and his wife, Mira, Daniel and Deanna Sell, and Dylan Geer; five great-grandchildren: Amber Scott, Zach and Oliver Marohl, and Carmen and Reese Johnson; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
