Memorial Mass for Charlene L. "Char" Hoxmeier will be conducted from the All Saints Catholic Church in Holdrege, Nebraska on Thursday, May 29, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. with Father Thomas Lux, officiating. Rosary will be held at the church on Thursday, morning prior to the memorial service at 9:30 a.m. Private family inurnment will be in the Moses Hill Cemetery in Phelps County, Nebraska.
Charlene L. "Char" Hoxmeier, 78 years of age, of Holdrege, passed away on Thursday, May 22, 2008 at her home in Holdrege following a courageous battle with cancer. Char was born January 28, 1930 on the family farm north of Holdrege in Phelps County, Nebraska, the third of four children of Charles and Olevia (Jurgens) Loar. She received her primary education in rural Phelps County and then graduated from Holdrege High School with the class of 1947. She pursued higher education in business at Kearney State Teachers College in 1948.
On February 22, 1949 she was united in marriage to John C. Hoxmeier and to this union four children were born: JoEllen, Kay, John and Leslie. Following John's return from Naval service, the couple made their home in Orleans, Nebraska. In 1953, they moved to Holdrege, where Char's focus was her family, caring for their home and raising their children. She was employed by S & W Auto Parts and JC Penny's as a bookkeeper for many years prior to opening Char's Fabrics in 1969. Char's involvement in the business continued until her failing health this past year.
Char was a member of the All Saints Catholic Church, where she was involved with Alter Society and sang in the church choir. She was also active with 4-H through the years, was past Chairperson of the Phelps County Red Cross and enjoyed her involvement with the Red Cross Water Safety Program. Char and John traveled extensively, enjoyed dancing and she loved tending to her garden. On January 21, 1997 she was preceded in death by her husband, John.
She leaves to mourn her passing her four children: Jo Lundeen and her husband, Swan of Holdrege, Kay Kassube and her husband, Dr. Tom Kassube of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, John Hoxmeier and his wife, Cindy of Ft. Collins, Colorado and Leslie Ramirez and her husband, Gonzalo of Denver, Colorado; thirteen grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one sister, Edna Mae Suhr of Holdrege; sisters-in-law: Edith Loar of Kansas City, Missouri and Margery Hoxmeier of Orleans, June Hoxmeier of Oregon and Betty Hoxmeier of Minnesota; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents; one brother, Don Loar; sister, Betty Dowling and her husband, Phil and brother-in-law, Gordon Suhr.
There will be no visitation, the family is honoring Char's wish for cremation.
