Funeral Services for Charles "Lee" Benson will be conducted from the Hope Lutheran Church near Smithfield, Nebraska on Wednesday, September 15, 2010 at 10:30 a.m. with Reverend Cathi Braasch, officiating. Interment will be held following the service at Highland Cemetery in Bertrand, Nebraska.
Charles "Lee" Benson, 82 years of age, of Bertrand, Nebraska passed away on Friday, September 10, 2010 at the Bertrand Nursing Home in Bertrand. Lee was born on June 18, 1928 in rural Bertrand to Andrew and Mattie (McCracken) Benson. He attended Curtis High School, graduating with the class of 1946. After graduation, he attended school in Chicago before serving his country in the United States Air Force.
On December 28, 1952 he was united in marriage to Betty Ann Fritz in Smithfield, Nebraska and to this union six children were born; Evonne, Doyle, Neil, Carl, Sharon and LeAnn. The couple made their home in Cape Canaveral, Florida until Lee was honorably discharged from the Air Force. The couple then returned to take over the Bertrand family farm. They retired in 1993 at which time they became distributors for the Mountain Man Candy Company and were tour guides for a travel agency.
Charles was a member of the United Methodist Church in Bertrand and the Hope Lutheran Church of rural Smithfield. He enjoyed spending time with his family, friends and traveling.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Betty in 1999; daughter, Evonne in 1962; one great-granddaughter; brother, Floyd Benson and sister, Doris Phillips.
Survivors include his three sons: Doyle Benson and his wife, Carol, of Bertrand, Neil Benson of Kearney, Nebraska and Carl Benson of Bertrand; two daughters: Sharon White and her husband, Steve of Kearney, Nebraska and LeAnn Smith and her husband, "Larz" of Highlands Ranch, Colorado; 19 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews other relatives and friends.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, September 14, 2010 from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with the family greeting from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. at the Sandstrom Funeral Home in Bertrand.
A memorial has been established in his memory and will be designated at a later date.
