Funeral services for Charles J. Harder will be conducted from the First United Methodist Church in Holdrege, Nebraska on Thursday, September 24, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. with the Reverend Dale Lambert officiating. Interment will be in the Prairie Home Cemetery in Holdrege.
Charles J. "Charlie" Harder, 100 years of age, of Holdrege, passed away on Sunday, September 20, 2009 at the Phelps Memorial Health Center in Holdrege. He was born on April 17, 1909 in Phelps County, Nebraska, the second of three children born to William F. "Will" and Minnie (Jurgens) Harder. Charlie attended school at District #30 rural school in Phelps County.
Charlie grew up on the family farm, working for his father and various farmers around the community.
On March 18, 1936 he was united in marriage to Elvida Mae "Vi" Carson and to this union two sons were born: Larry and Leon. Charlie continued farming and also worked for the CO-OP Oil Company for 17 years. Vi passed away on January 19, 1986.
Charlie was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Holdrege and the Skunk-Hollow Card and Square Dance Club. He enjoyed spending time with his family and also enjoyed gardening. He was well known for his strong work ethic.
Besides his parents and wife, Vi, Charlie was preceded in death by his brother, Glen at 7 months of age in 1915, and his sister, Lula who died in a farm accident.
He is survived by his two sons: Larry Harder and his wife, Claudia of Waco, Texas, and Leon Harder of Alma, Nebraska; one grandson, Chris Harder of Alma, Nebraska; and many other friends and relatives.
Visitation will be held one hour prior to the funeral on Thursday, September 24, 2009 at the church.
A memorial has been established in his memory and will be designated at a later date.
