Celebration of Life Service for Charles E. "Chuck" Wolzen will be held Friday, January 6, 2017 at 3:00 p.m. at the Fridhem Lutheran Church in Funk, Nebraska with Pastor Darren Popple officiating. Private family inurnment will be held at the Fridhem Cemetery at Funk, prior to the service with military honors provided by the Martin-Horn American Legion Post #66 in conjunction with the U.S. Army Military Honor Guard. In honor of Chuck's love for the Huskers, the family request Nebraska apparel for those attending.
Charles Elvin "Chuck" Wolzen, 82 years of age, of Scottsbluff, Nebraska (formerly of Funk), passed away on Monday, January 2, 2017 at the Western Nebraska Veteran's Home in Scottsbluff. Charles was born July 22, 1934 at Hendley, Nebraska, the fourth of six children born to Ehme "Jack" Wolzen, Jr. and Marie (Hunnicutt) Wolzen. He received his primary education at Hendley and then graduated from Beaver City High School with the class of 1951.
Following his education, Chuck was inducted into the United States Army and served his country during the Korean War from March 16, 1954 until his honorable discharge on March 8, 1956. After his service he returned home to Oxford, Nebraska, where he engaged in his life-long career of truck driving.
On August 28, 1993 he was united in marriage to Fern A. Wendland at the Fridhem Lutheran Church in Funk. The couple resided in Funk and enjoyed traveling together to visit family. Later in years during their retirement years, he and Fern were employed at the Coffee Cup Café in Funk, where they met in years past. Chuck was also employed at the Funk CO-OP and Elevator. On April 13, 2006 he was preceded in death by his wife, Fern.
Chuck's sense of humor was keen, his story-telling that evolved always into a joke will be remembered fondly by his friends and family. He was an avid Nebraska Husker Fan, and loved going to the horse races in Grand Island, Nebraska with his cousin, Merlyn Penrod. Chuck also loved attending his grandchildren's activities and sporting events.
Besides his wife, Fern and parents; Chuck was preceded in death by: infant son, Frances Charles Wolzen; step-son, Robert Howsden; two sisters: Barbara Hellner and her husband, Tom and Mary Gene Keezer and her husband, Bill; brother, Jack Wolzen and his wife, Mary Jane; and a nephew, Charles "Chuck" Peacock.
He leaves to celebrate his life; his step-sons: Dan Howsden and his wife, Carol of Millington, TN, Ron Howsden and his wife, Marleen of Gering, Nebraska, and Bill Howsden and his wife, Connie of Wakefield, Kansas; step-daughter, Jeannie Steinbrink and her husband, David of Holdrege, Nebraska; step daughter-in-law, JoAnn Howsden of Iowa; twelve grandchildren; a host of great-grandchildren; two sisters: Connie Tams and her husband, Rod of Oxford, Nebraska and Toni Peacock and her husband, Cal of Valley, Nebraska; and several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
There will be no visitation, the family is honoring his wish for cremation.
A memorial has been established in Chuck's honor and kindly suggested to the Fridhem Lutheran Church in Funk or the St. Jude's Children's Hospital.
