(Charley) Winheim will be held on Thursday, May 3, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at the Hope Lutheran Church in rural Smithfield, Nebraska with Pastor Darrel Wissmann officiating. Interment will be held following the services in the Highland Cemetery at Bertrand, Nebraska with military honors provided by the Bertrand Veterans Organization in conjunction with the United States Army Military Honors Team.
Charles Marion (Charley) Winheim, 87 years of age, of Bertrand, passed away on Saturday, April 28, 2018 at the Bertrand Nursing Home. Charley was born on July 5, 1930 at the Brewster Hospital in Holdrege, Nebraska, the only child born to Earnest and Treva (Bonser) Winheim. He received his primary education from a country school in Gosper County, Nebraska, and then graduated from Bertrand High School with the class of 1949.
On September 23, 1952, Charley was inducted into the United States Army, and served his country as a Sergeant during the Korean Conflict until his honorable discharge on July 15, 1954 at Camp Carson, Colorado. Following his service, he returned home to Bertrand.
On May 14, 1955, Charley was united in marriage to Audrey Rosanne Chambers at the Bethel Lutheran Church in Holdrege, and to this union three children were born: Kirk, Steven, and Joyce. The family made their home in Bertrand, where Charley was well known on his Propane Delivery Truck, serving multiple counties for different companies throughout his career of more than 40 years.
Charley was a devoted member of the Hope Lutheran Church, where he served on the church council, and ushered for many years. In his younger years, he also served as an Assistant Boy Scout Master, he was also a member of the Masonic Lodge, and very active with the American Legion and V.F.W. During his retirement, Charley enjoyed driving the ESU Pre-School Bus, where many friendship bonds were formed with the children he transported. A highlight of his life in later years, was being honored to take the Freedom Honor Flight to Washington D.C.
Charley was an avid Husker Athletic fan, and enjoyed following the Bertrand Vikings; but most of all he loved attending his grandchildren's sporting events and activities.
Besides his parents, Charley was preceded in death by his father-in-law and mother-in-law: Clyde and Corrie Chambers; and brother-in-law, Keith Chambers and his wife, Marlus.
He leaves to celebrate his life, his wife of almost 63 years, Audrey Winheim of Bertrand; three children: Kirk Winheim and his wife, Roxanne of Bertrand; Steve Winheim of Bertrand; and Joyce Hickenbottom and her husband, Dick of Holdrege; five grandchildren: Dustin Winheim and his special friend, Tosha Werkmeister; Ross Winheim and his wife, Maggie; Chelsa Wolf and her husband, Brandon; Samantha Buettner and her husband, Brett; and Brad Winheim and his wife, Bethany; five great-grandchildren: Hadlie and Kaleb Wolf; Merick and Blair Buettner; and Charlie Winheim; and a host other relatives and friends.
