Celebration of Life Service for Charles F. "Chuck" Johnson will be held on Friday, April 21, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Holdrege, Nebraska with Reverend Dr. W. Kirwin Stewart, Jr. officiating. A private family inurnment will be held at a later date at the Prairie Home Cemetery in Holdrege, with military honors provided by the Martin-Horn American Legion Post #66 in conjunction with the United States Army Funeral Honors Team.
Charles Fredrick Johnson, 86 years of age, of Holdrege, passed away on Monday, April 17, 2017 at the Phelps Memorial Health Center. Chuck was born December 4, 1930, on the family farm southeast of Holdrege in Phelps County, Nebraska, the second of five children born to Fred L. and Ellen G. (Youngquist) Johnson. He received his primary education from District #19 rural school in Phelps County through the eighth grade, and then graduated from Holdrege High School with the class of 1948.
On June 10, 1951, Chuck was inducted into the United States Army, and served his country during the Korean Conflict, until his honorable discharge on June 10, 1953.
On November 21, 1954, he was united in marriage to Diana Kay "D.K." Palmer at the First Presbyterian Church in Holdrege. To this union two children were born: Lisa and Blake. The family made their home in Holdrege.
In 1954, Chuck began his lifelong passion of farming. He continued to farm, and in addition he was employed by Becton-Dickinson for fourteen years. In 1985, he began working at Durable Service as a Heating and Air Conditioning serviceman, until his full retirement in 1996.
Chuck had a passion for horses. Many friendship bonds were formed throughout the years in the Saddle Club, and attending rodeos throughout the area. During his retirement years, Chuck enjoyed volunteering at the Phelps County Pantry, and delivering Meals-on-Wheels. Most of all, Chuck loved attending his grandchildren's sporting events.
Chuck was a long-time member of the First Presbyterian Church, where he served as an usher and past elder.
He was preceded in death by his wife, D.K. Johnson; his parents; his father-in-law and mother-in-law: L.W. "Bud" and Ruth Palmer; two brothers: Robert D. Johnson and Richard "Dick" Johnson; two nephews: Roger Fandry Johnson and Brian Davis; sisters-in-law: Marvel Johnson and Lynn Edwards; and brothers-in-law: Dale Carlson and Marmion Edwards.
He leaves to celebrate his life; his two children: Lisa Johnson, and Blake Johnson and his wife, Renee all of Holdrege; son-in-law, Bob Stehl of Hildreth, Nebraska; seven grandchildren: Seth Schroeder and his wife, Ellie, Ethan Schroeder and his special friend, Emily Heideman, Rachel Johnson, and Lauren, Garret, Lucas and Gracie Johnson; six great-grandchildren: Braxton and Brady Schroeder, Jaxon and A.J. Schroeder, and Noah and Emelia Johnson; two sisters: Beverly Carlson of Minden, Nebraska and Sharon Davis of Littleton, Colorado; sisters-in-law: Verlyn Johnson of Holdrege, and Joyce Johnson of Janesville, Wisconsin; along with many nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
Memorial Book Signing will be held on Thursday, April 20, 2017 from 4:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. with the family greeting from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Holdrege.
A memorial has been established in Chuck's honor and kindly suggested to the First Presbyterian Church of Holdrege, or the Holdrege High School Athletic Department.
