A funeral service for Clayton H. Schubert will be held on Saturday, February 7, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hildreth, Nebraska, with Pastor Caroline Schenk officiating. Interment will follow at the Wilcox Cemetery in Wilcox, Nebraska, with Military Honors provided by the Wilcox American Legion Post #377 in conjunction with the United States Army Funeral Honors Team.
Clayton Henry Schubert, 97 years of age, of Holdrege, Nebraska, formerly of Wilcox, entered his heavenly home on Sunday, February 1, 2026, at Holdrege Memorial Homes, surrounded by his family. Clayton and his twin sister, Kathleen, were born on January 7, 1929, on the family farm south of Wilcox in Franklin County, Nebraska, to Raymond and Elsie (Schluntz) Schubert. He was the smallest of the twins, weighing 3 ½ pounds. He was baptized as an infant and confirmed in 1944 by Rev. A. G. Trost at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hildreth. Clayton and his three sisters, Kay, Delores and Marjean were raised in a loving Christian home. He attended Forest Valley District 51 country school, one-half mile from his home. After eighth grade, he went to Wilcox Public School and graduated with the class of 1946.
After graduation, Clayton farmed with his father until he enlisted in the Army in 1953. He served two years during the Korean War, stationed in Germany. He was very proud to be a veteran and, in his later years, eager to share stories of his service.
Clayton met Grace Lyon at the roller-skating rink in Holdrege. They were united in marriage on August 8, 1958, at Holcomb Evangelical Free Church. They had three children: Mark, David, and Linda. They worked together and raised their family on the farm that was homesteaded by his grandfather, August Schubert, in 1881. Clayton spent his life setting a good example of hard work and Christian values, leaving a legacy for his children and grandchildren. His dedication to the farm made a lasting impact on his family.
Clayton was very involved in St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hildreth, which later became Trinity Lutheran Church throughout his life. He served as the Central District Luther League President from 1955-1958, Sunday School Superintendent, Sunday School teacher, and served on Church Council.
Clayton was involved in the community in many ways. He was a member of the Wilcox School Board for 12 years, the Co-op board, the American Legion, and the Lions Club. In his later years, Clayton enjoyed his time serving with the Gideons. Through these connections, he made many lifelong friends of all ages.
In 1992, Clayton and Grace moved to Wilcox. Their hearts were broken in 1995 with the unexpected loss of their son Mark. What a joyous reunion they have had as they are reunited in Heaven now.
Besides his parents, Clayton was preceded in death by his wife, Grace; son Mark; sister, Kathleen Springer and husband, Donald Springer; three brothers-in-law: Kenneth Lyon; Max Schultz; LaMonte and wife, Barbara Lyon.
He leaves to mourn his passing; his son, David Schubert and wife, Diane of Wilcox; daughter, Linda Harms and husband, John of Martell, Nebraska; three grandchildren: Benjamin Harms and fiancé, Grace Heinen of Fargo, North Dakota; Emily Harms of Martell and friend Kaden Karst; and Luke Harms of Lincoln, Nebraska; two sisters, Delores Carlson and husband, Franklin of Holdrege; and Marjean Schultz of Oxford, Nebraska; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
A visitation will be held on Friday, February 6, 2026, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with family greeting friends from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Bauer-Torrey & Mach Funeral Home in Wilcox.
A memorial has been established in Clayton's honor, and kindly suggested to the family for later designation.
