Clifford Howard Barnes, 94 years of age, of Holdrege, passed away on Wednesday, September 13, 2017, at Holdrege Memorial Homes. Clifford was born on March 14, 1923, and delivered at home on the kitchen table in Ord, Nebraska. He was the eldest of two children born to Howard Edward and Clara (Hansen) Barnes. Clifford attended North Loup High School, graduating with the class of 1941.

Following his education, he was inducted into the U.S. Army, on June 16, 1943. He served with the 371 st Engineers during World War II, until his honorable discharge on January 6, 1946. Upon returning home, Clifford then began working for the Bureau of Reclamations in Grand Island, Nebraska, and it was at this time he met his future wife, Marian.

On February 1, 1947, Clifford was united in marriage to Marian Elinore Akerson at Belleville, Kansas, and to this union, they were blessed with one son, Michael Dennis. The family made their home in Grand Island, where he pursued higher education at the Grand Island Business College for 2 years, graduating in 1948. In 1953, he took a position as a Budget and Programs Officer for the U.S. Postal Service in Lakewood, Colorado, where he continued to work until his retirement in 1975. Following retirement, Clifford and Marian relocated to Holdrege to be closer to family. In their failing health, Clifford and Marian then began to make their home at Holdrege Memorial Homes. Marian preceded him in death on September 29, 2014.

Clifford was a devoted member of the First Presbyterian Church in Holdrege, the Martin-Horn American Legion Post #66, and active with Ducks Unlimited. He enjoyed gardening, had a hobby for coin and stamp collecting, and loved spending time at his farm near Mascot, Nebraska in Harlan County. Clifford had a great sense of humor, and always enjoyed a good joke.
