Colt Ray Bartels, 33 years of age, of Lincoln, Nebraska (formerly of rural Ragan, Nebraska), passed away unexpectedly while fishing near the Canaday Steam plant south of Lexington, Nebraska on Tuesday, August 16, 2011.

Colt was born October 21, 1977 at Holdrege, the eldest of two children born to Mike and Julie (Johnson) Bartels. He received his education from Wilcox Public Schools, graduating from Wilcox High School with the class of 1996. He then pursued higher education at the Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture in Curtis, Nebraska, where he studied large animal production. He then returned home to the family farm near Ragan, Nebraska to assist with the Ranching Operations.

On May 19, 2001 he was united in marriage to Christina Joann Flesner at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Hildreth, Nebraska. The couple continued to reside in the Ragan area for a few years, before moving to Lincoln in 2006. While in Lincoln, Colt continued a career with cattle and horses. Colt's passion for horses led him to open his own horse training facility near Sprague and Martell, Nebraska. He also loved roping, hunting and fishing.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents: Merlyn "Mert" and Dorcel Johnson and uncle, Gregg Johnson in infancy.

He leaves to mourn his passing his wife, Christina of Lincoln; his parents: Mike and Julie Bartels of rural Ragan; sister, Cacy Fletcher and her husband, Troy of Oxford, Nebraska; grandparents: Delbert and Venla Bartels of Holdrege; father-in-law and mother-in-law: Roger and Bonnie Flesner of Franklin, Nebraska; brother-in-law, Brian Flesner and his wife, Stacy of Seward, Nebraska; three nephews and one niece: Caden and Jaxen Fletcher and Brenden and Lindsay Flesner; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, other relatives and friends.

The family will have a private family visitation.

A memorial has been established in his memory and will be designated at a later date.
