Mass of Christian Burial for Connie J. Kuhl will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, December 14, 2009 at the St. Mary's Catholic Church in Orleans, Nebraska with Father Harlan Waskowiak, officiating. Interment will be held at the Mt. Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Orleans.
Connie Jean Kuhl, 71 years of age, of Orleans, passed away on Thursday, December 10, 2009 at the Harlan County Health Systems in Alma, Nebraska. She was born on January 11, 1938 on the home farm north of Orleans to Norbert Peter and Nettie Francis (Mousel) Streff. She shared these parents with her younger brother, Stan. Connie attended school for eight years at Pleasant Ridge District #27 and graduated form Orleans High School in 1955.
After graduation she worked as a telephone operator for Northwestern Bell Telephone Company until her marriage to Winnie Eggert Kuhl on October 10, 1959. Her union to Winnie was blessed with three children: Tom, Scott and Rhonda.
After her marriage she worked at the Orleans Hi-Way Café from 1960 to 1961 and at the Orleans Equity Creamery from 1964-1965. In 1969 she began driving the bus for Orleans Public Schools. Her favorite part of that job was taking home the kindergarteners at noon. When Kindergarten became a full day event, Connie began working in the kitchen at the Orleans Schools. Connie continued to drive the bus until 2009, logging in forty years of service to the school district.
Faith was a cornerstone of Connie's life. She was a lifelong member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Orleans where she served as the Altar Society Secretary for many years. She volunteered at the Museum for the Historical Society and enjoyed gardening, walking, family and the outdoors.
Her husband, Winnie passed away on October 20, 1993.
She leaves to mourn her passing, two sons: Tom Kuhl and his wife Ellen of Stamford, Nebraska, Scott Kuhl and his wife, Cherie of Orleans, one daughter: Rhonda McKown and her husband, Mike of Holdrege, Nebraska; 3 granddaughters; 3 step-grandsons; one brother, Stan Streff and his wife, Dorothy of Hastings, Nebraska; a host of other relatives and a bus load of former student riders.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Winnie.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, December 13, 2009 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Orleans from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with the family greeting from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Wake Service will follow at 7:00 p.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church.
A memorial has been established and will be designated at a later date.
