She was born on October 15, 1944, in Kearney, Nebraska, the second of four children born to Lawrence Weldon and Edith Mae (Pettett) Nelson of Loomis, Nebraska. She grew up attending Westmark Church in rural Loomis and was raised on the farm where she enjoyed 4-H and farming. Connie received her education from R-3 rural school in Phelps County and later, Loomis High School, graduating with the class of 1962. She then pursued higher education from Kearney State College and Omaha Secretary School.

Connie worked as a receptionist and dental assistant for Dr. Ed Kavaugh, in Kansas City for 12 years. Connie returned to the family farm in 1977 where she was again active in 4-H, local bowling leagues, and enjoyed her time at the lake with family and friends. She supported her son's sports activities and continued to farm while working at Palmer Brothers Granite Company and later for Dana F. Cole CPA firm from 2001 until her retirement in 2007.
Connie enjoyed fishing, golfing, and bowling, as well as her travels, and supporting her local community.
Connie was preceded in death by her son, Mike (2007); father, Lawrence (2011); mother, Edie (2001); nephew, Kent Longfellow (1967); and two brothers-in-law, Stan Longfellow (2019); and Dan Johansen (1998).
