Daniel Vern Jarvis, 69 years of age, of Kearney, Nebraska, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, August 6, 2016 at his home in Kearney. Dan was born October 21, 1946 at Mora, Minnesota, the third of five children born to Vern "Bus" and Alyce (Whalen) Jarvis. At a young age the family moved to Kearney and then to Bertrand, Nebraska. He began his primary education at the Bertrand Community School until he was in the third grade when the family moved to Holdrege. Dan then completed his education at Holdrege Public Schools, graduating from Holdrege High School with the class of 1965. He then pursued higher education at Chadron State College before his induction into the United States Army during Vietnam. Dan served his country from January 26, 1966 until his honorable discharge on January 25, 1968. He then continued to serve in the Army Reserves until January 25, 1972.
On April 15, 1972 he was united in marriage to Roberta Mandera in Sutherlin, Oregon and to this union two children were born: Alyce Ann and David Phillip. The family made their home in Bertrand, where Dan and Roberta owned and operated the Branding Iron for several years. This marriage later ended in divorce. Dan later returned to Holdrege, where he worked in several positions throughout the years. He was most known for his carpentry work and a man who could build or fix anything.
While in Holdrege, Dan had a special woman in his life, Bonnie Walton. The couple enjoyed over twenty-five years together until she preceded him in death in 2009.
Dan loved camping and fishing, and was an avid Nebraska Husker Football fan.
Besides his parents and his companion, Bonnie; Dan was preceded in death by his brother, David Lee Jarvis in 1968; brother-in-law, Lester Bell; two nephews: Michael Marlett and Ryan Covert; and his special dog, Zoey.
He leaves to celebrate his life; his daughter, Alyce Jarvis of Omaha, Nebraska; his son, David P. Jarvis and his wife, Heidi of Kearney; seven grandchildren: Mikayla, Sydney, Cassidy, Hailey, Trista, Kyle, and Ashton; three sisters: Charlotte Bell of Red Cloud, Nebraska, Carol Covert and her husband, Butch of Kearney and Kathy Lovett of Milner, North Dakota; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, August 11, 2016 from 4:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. with the family greeting from 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. at the Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Holdrege.
