She was baptized and confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church in Wilcox, Nebraska. Being raised on the farm, in Darlene's younger years she enjoyed herding the cows from the pasture for milking, and would often remain in the pasture until her mom called for her. Following graduation, Darlene moved to Holdrege, and was employed in downtown Holdrege as a secretary for Leslie Allmand. In 1970, she accepted a position at the Phelps County Treasurer's Office. In 1987, she relocated to Las Vegas, where she began a career in accounting within the casino industry. She later moved to Pahrump, where she continued working in the accounting department for the Saddle West Casino.
Darlene enjoyed following the activities of her three nephews. Her hobbies included ceramics, counted cross- stitch, collecting stuffed teddy bears, and loved participating musically in her church praise team. She was a faithful member of the Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church in Pahrump.
