Funeral Services for Darrell E. Thorell will be conducted from the Evangelical Free Church in Loomis, Nebraska on Friday, July 31, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. with Reverend Tom Thompson, officiating. Interment will be in Moses Hill Cemetery in rural Phelps County, Nebraska.

Darrell Eugene Thorell, 82 years of age, of Loomis, passed away on Tuesday, July 28, 2009 at the Phelps Memorial Health Center in Holdrege, Nebraska. He was born November 23, 1926 on the family farm east of Loomis in Phelps County, the eldest of two sons born to Carl W. and Olga (Sunblade) Thorell. He received his primary education at District #29 and then Loomis Public Schools, graduating from Loomis High School with the class of 1943.

Darrell engaged in farming from 1942 until 1974. He then joined the Thorell Insurance Agency and sold insurance with his father, Carl W. Thorell until his retirement from the business in 2001.

On March 22, 1948 he was united in marriage to Marie Urbom and to this union three children were born: Dave, Dan and Jan.

Darrell was a member of the Evangelical Free Church of Loomis and served on the church board as Chairman, Elder, Deacon, and taught Sunday school for over fifty years. He served on the Christian Homes Care Community Board and active with the Board of Ministerial Standing for the Midwest District of the EFCA. He served one term on the Loomis Village Board and was a past member of the Loomis Volunteer Fire Department. Darrell was an avid Baseball and Softball player and played for teams in Loomis, Oxford and Beaver City, Nebraska during his career. Darrell enjoyed playing carom and dominoes, always attempting to beat his kids and grandkids.

During his later years, Darrell was asked to write a column for the Bertrand Herald bi-weekly and always ended his column with the words, "Enough said."

He leaves to mourn his passing his wife, Marie of Loomis; three children: Dave Thorell and his wife, Patti, Dan Thorell and Jan Adams all of Loomis; four grandchildren: Matt Thorell of Loomis, James Thorell of Round Rock, Texas, Chelsea Adams of Omaha, Nebraska and Chappell Adams of Loomis; one great-grandson, Jadarien Adams of Omaha; one brother, Leland Thorell and his wife, Shirley of Holdrege; and many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation will be held at the Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Holdrege on Thursday, July 30, 2009 from 1:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. with the family greeting from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.

A memorial has been established in his memory and kindly suggested to the Evangelical Free Church of Loomis.
