David Dean High, 92 years of age, a lifelong resident of Bertrand, passed away on Monday, October 16, 2023, surrounded by his family, at the Bertrand Nursing Home.  David was born and baptized on August 15, 1931, at the Brewster Hospital in Holdrege, the second of three children born to Edward Bernard and Sylvera Marie (Holmquist) High. He received his education from Bertrand Public Schools, graduating with the class of 1949. He pursued higher education at Luther College in Wahoo, Nebraska.

On January 30, 1952, David was drafted into the United States Marine Corps. He served during the Korean Conflict.  Following his honorable discharge, he moved back to Bertrand.

On November 17, 1956, David married Margaret Ann Maaske at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Bertrand. They were blessed with two children, DeDe and Phil. The family made their home on a farm near Bertrand, where David engaged in his lifelong passion of farming and enjoyed the labor of the land. In 1987, the couple moved off the farm and into town, where they enjoyed retirement. In the fall of 2013, they moved to Brookdale Northridge at Kearney and then to Chrisoma West in Holdrege.

Besides his passion for farming, David loved attending his grandchildren's activities and his collection of old cars. David and Margaret also enjoyed spending many winters in Arizona.

David was a lifelong member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church, where he was confirmed, and served in various positions through the years. He was a member of many organizations, but a few of his favorite were the V.F.W., the  American Legion, and the Golden Car Club. In 1986, David began his sobriety journey and was a faithful member of A.A., "A Friend To Bill".  On October 28, 2023, he would have celebrated his 37th year.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Gloria Lamb and her husband, Al; four brothers-in-law: Delmer Maaske and his wife, Alice; Eldred Maaske; Darrel Maaske and his first wife, Faye; and Merwyn Jones; and two sisters-in-law: Linda Maaske; and Grace Maaske in infancy.

David leaves to celebrate his life, his wife Margaret of Holdrege; daughter, DeDe Peterson and her husband, Rocky of Johnson Lake, Nebraska; son: Phil High and his wife, Heidi of Bertrand; seven grandchildren: Alexa Benson and her husband, Matt; Dalton Peterson and his wife, Rachel; Ashton Peterson and his wife, Paige; Nolan High and wife, Shelby; Jadyn High; Creighton Peterson and his wife, Emma; and Atlee High; nine great-grandchildren: Ramsey, Stanton, Pierce, and Quincy Benson; Clay, Macy, and Ally Peterson; and Carson and Gannon Peterson; one sister, Vivian Bowman and her husband, James of Albuquerque, New Mexico; three brothers-in-law: Bernard "Ben" Maaske and his wife, Ruth of Lincoln; Roland "Ron" Maaske and his wife, Lyn of Lincoln; and Wayne Maaske of Bertrand; three sisters-in-law: Darlene Samuelson and her husband, Allen of Bertrand; Millie Jones of Holdrege; and Janice (Broeker) York Maaske of Kearney, Nebraska; along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family.
