A Funeral Service for Dennis Hinson will be held on Saturday, November 14, 2026, at 10:30 a.m. at the Bertrand Community Building in Bertrand, Nebraska, with Mr. Scott Ford officiating. Interment will follow at the Highland Cemetery, Bertrand, Nebraska. Come celebrate Dennis’s life by wearing a Hawaiian shirt or any brightly colored attire.
Dennis Bruce Hinson was born Jan 3, 1954, at Arkansas City KS, to Robert Lee and Ada Colleen (Worden) Hinson. His early education was at the Martha Washington Rural School at Hackney, KS, until moving to Nebraska in 1964. He attended Bertrand High School and had many good times and memories of playing trombone in the band, band trips and marching in the Bertrand Parade. For several years, while in college, he would come home to march and play with the band in the parade. He graduated from Bertrand with the Class of 1972 and from UNL in 1976.
He returned home and with the help of his parents, he purchased the Don & Helen Nelson farm, which was across the road from the family farm. There he raised corn, milo & wheat, along with Angus/Hereford cross cattle and hogs. In the mid 80's, Bob and Dennis began raising registered Charolais cattle, becoming members of the NE Charolais Association and selling registered bulls. After 20 yrs they gave up the registered cattle and began to crossbreed the Charolais with Red Angus.
On April 7, 1979, he was united in marriage to Lori Ann Moyer. They were blessed with 2 children, Kelsey Janel and Garrett Owen.
When the grandkids came along, Dennis discovered his love of the Hawaiian shirt. He wanted something bright when he met them in the hospital, so he wore a bright red with large white hibiscus for Kendra and a bright yellow with white hibiscus for Joshua. He wore those shirts every year for their birthdays. Finding them to be so comfortable, more Hawaiian shirts were added to his wardrobe and if you ever caught him away from the farm, he was most likely in a Hawaiian shirt.
Dennis loved being a farmer and raising cattle, which didn't leave much time for other things, but he was an avid reader. He was a member of the Holdrege Friends of the Library and always looked forward to setting up and volunteering for a shift at their annual book sale. He participated in the Silent Book Club and Bring Your Own Book, Book Club, both of which took place at the Holdrege Library. Dennis was also a member of the Novel Idea Book Club (usually the only man with 11 to 14 ladies) and looked forward every month to surprising the ladies with his creative snack that would somehow tie into the theme of the book. He enjoyed volunteering at the Oxford Grenada Theatre taking tickets and working the concession stand.
He enjoyed attending his grandkids events and spending time with family. From a young age he was involved with showing cattle in 4H and continued helping his children and grandchildren with their 4H projects. He was the 4H leader of the Hi Line Hustlers for many years and the Phelps/Gosper shooting sports instructor for 25 yrs.
Dennis was preceded in death by his mother Ada; his brother Bart Hinson; mother-in-law, Ramona Koch; and his daughter Kelsey, who had passed from cancer, just 45 days earlier.
He leaves behind is wife Lori Hinson of Bertrand; son Garrett Hinson of Holdrege; his father Robert Hinson of Bertrand; father-in-law, Gilbert Koch of Eustis, Nebraska; two sisters: Denise (Steve) Klein of Holdrege; and Jana Nation and friend, Gary Kulhanek of Bertrand; brother, Brett (Danice) Hinson of Bertrand; son-in-law, Jason Kunkel; and grandson, Joshua Kunkel of Julesburg, Colorado; granddaughter, Kendra Kunkel of Lamar, Nebraska; two brothers-in-law: Gene (Jan) Moyer of Phoenix, Arizona; Ken (Kristi) Moyer of Lexington, Nebraska; sister-in-law Cindy (Rich) Hasty, Overton, Nebraska; along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
A visitation will be held on Friday, November 13, 2026, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Holdrege, with the family greeting from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
