Graveside Services for Dolores W. Sand will be conducted at Prairie Home Cemetery in Holdrege, Nebraska on Wednesday, March 11, 2015 at 2:30 p.m. with Pastor Murray Jones officiating.


Dolores Winifred Sand, 91 years of age, of Lincoln, Nebraska, formerly of the Loomis area, passed away on Friday, March 6, 2015 at Tabitha Health Care in Lincoln. Dolores was born on August 21, 1923 in Cawker City, Kansas, the second of three children born to Lloyd "Bud" and Theresa C. (Stroh) Coburn. When Dolores was ten years old, the family moved to Holdrege as her father took a job at the Roller Mill. She graduated with the Holdrege High School, class of 1941.

Following graduation, Dolores took a job with Northwestern Bell Telephone Company in Holdrege.

In October 1946, Dolores was united in marriage to Johnny C. Sand in Phillipsburg, Kansas. To this union two children were born, Jerry in 1947 and Kathy in 1953. The couple made their home north of Loomis, on the Sand family homestead. On January 27, 1979, Johnny preceded Dolores in death. Dolores continued to make her home on the farm until 1995, until she relocated to Lincoln to be closer to her daughter. Dolores kept her independence until 2014 until she began to make her home at Tabitha Health Care Services.

Dolores enjoyed quilting and all types of gardening. She enjoyed spending time with her family and babysitting the Steinbrink boys and her granddaughters.

Besides her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by sister, Dorothy Byrne and husband, Gene; brother, Robert Coburn; brother-in-law: Charles Sand and his wife, Marilyn.

Dolores is survived by, her children: Kathy Loschen and her husband, Lance of Lincoln and Jerry Sand and his wife, Nancy of St. Croix Falls, Wisconsin; five grandchildren: Chris Sand and his wife, Jennifer of Circle Pines, Minnesota, Amy Gale and her husband, Mark and Jaci Clack and her husband, Jeremy both of Big Sky, Montana, Jill Hullinger and her husband, Waylon of Lincoln and Jennifer Forke and her husband, Tyler of Palmyra, Nebraska; eight great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law: Betty Coburn of Denver, Colorado and Harriet Sand of Kearney, Nebraska; along with a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, March 11, 2015 from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. with the family greeting friends from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. at the Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Holdrege.

A memorial has been established in Dolores's honor and kindly suggested to the Nebraska Prairie Museum in Holdrege.
