Funeral Services for Doris K. High will be conducted from the Holcomb Evangelical Free Church north of Holdrege, Nebraska on Tuesday, March 15, 2011 at 2:30 p.m. with Reverend Todd Marcy, officiating. Interment will be in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery north of Bertrand, Nebraska.

Doris Kathryn High, 87 years of age, Aurora, Nebraska (formerly of Bertrand) passed away on Friday, March 11, 2011 at the Hamilton Manor in Aurora. Doris was born May 22, 1923 on the family farm northeast of Holdrege in Phelps County, Nebraska, the fourth of nine children of William and Pauline (Yeager) Anderson. She received her education from Bertrand High School, graduating with the class of 1941. Following her education, Doris taught school in a rural Phelps County school for three years.

On September 20, 1945 she was united in marriage to James O. High of Bertrand at her parent's home north of Holdrege. To this union five children were born: Joyce, Richard, Mark, Teresa and Jon. The couple engaged in farming north of Bertrand on her husband, James' grandfather's homestead. They continued to reside on the family farm, where Doris' focus was raising their children and assisting Jim with the obligations of the farming operation. Doris also worked for the lumber yard in Bertrand, Christian Homes in Holdrege, and was a classroom aide in the Bertrand Schools. After their retirement in 1991, Doris and Jim relocated to Johnson Lake, Nebraska. On October 25, 1994 she was preceded in death by her husband, Jim. Since 1995, Doris made her home in Aurora until her passing.

Doris was a member of the Holcomb Evangelical Free Church and the Monroe Evangelical Free Church near Aurora. She was active in the Women's Missionary Society, President of the Midwest District WMS, taught Sunday school and directed the Junior Choir, was a deaconess, and served on several committees.

Doris' interests were crafts, quilting, woodworking, sewing, and decorating.

Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her two brothers: Wendell Anderson and his wife, Evelyn, and Leland Anderson; four sisters: Marie Johnson and her husband, Winfield, Louise Hendricks and her husband, Dean, Farres Lind and her husband, Floyd, and Roberta Streeter and her husband, Truman.

She leaves five children to mourn her passing: Joyce Hultgren and her husband, Alan of Aurora, Richard High and his wife, Sherri of Wichita, Kansas, Mark High and his wife, Cathy of Bertrand, Teri Heil and her husband, Ken Yoshida of Omaha, Nebraska and Jon High and his wife, Kenda of Kearney; thirteen grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; two brothers: Waynard Anderson and his wife, Maxine of Broken Bow, Nebraska and Ward Anderson and his wife, Connie of Elm Creek, Nebraska; sister-in-law, Sharon Anderson of Elm Creek; brother-in-law, Keith "Swede" Fastenau of Bertrand; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Visitation will be held on Monday, March 14, 2011 from 1:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. with the family greeting from 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. at the Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Holdrege.

A memorial has been established in her memory and will be designated at a later date.
