Doris Marie Patterson, 91 years of age, of Alma, Nebraska (formerly of Republican City) passed away on Wednesday, December 3, 2014 at the Colonial Villa Good Samaritan Center in Alma. Doris was born December 17, 1922 at Woodruff, Kansas, the youngest of three children born to Earl and Mabel (Larson) Young. She received her education from District #42 in Harlan County south of Republican City.
Following her education, Doris met her future husband, Cloyd E. "Shorty" Patterson at a dance and after a courtship the couple were united in marriage on July 12, 1940, by the Franklin County Judge Smith at the Franklin County Courthouse in Franklin, Nebraska. To this union five children were born: Sharon Marie, Linda Rae, Patricia Ann, Robert Earl, and Luetta Jean. The family resided in Republican City, before settling to Long Island, Kansas, where Shorty was employed by the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad and Doris focused her efforts raising their children, being a homemaker and later owned and operated, Doris' Diner in Long Island for several years. Through the years, she was also employed by Haeker Furriers in Alma doing alterations and sewing fur coats. Doris was also employed by Arnold's Industries in Holdrege. She then continued her cooking talent at the Elks Club and the Phelps County Senior Center in Holdrege until her retirement. In 1995, the couple returned to Republican City, where they resided the remainder of their married life. On September 15, 2009, Doris was preceded in death by her husband, Cloyd after 69 years of marriage. A couple years following Cloyd's passing, Doris moved into Alma, until her health began to decline. Doris made her home at the Colonial Villa since March of 2014.
Doris will be remembered for her love of gardening, which provided food for the table; she also enjoyed crocheting, word search puzzles and she and Cloyd loved to play cards with their many friends. She made clothing for her children from scratch from patterns she made from newspapers. Doris could often be caught whistling while she worked around the house, was an avid watcher of soap operas in the afternoon, and most of all she loved the time spent with her family.
On Monday morning, December 1, she accepted Christ as her Personal Savior and she was called home to be with Him on Wednesday night.
Besides her husband, Cloyd and her parents; Doris was preceded in death by two sons-in-law: Don Davis and William Tyrrell; sister, Helen Shriner; and brother, Donald Young.
Doris leaves to mourn her passing; her four daughters: Sharon Davis of Hastings, Nebraska, Linda Tyrrell of Kearney, Nebraska, Patricia Troyer and her husband, Rev. Russ Troyer of Holdrege, and Luetta Harrison and her husband, David of Littleton, Colorado; her son, Bob Patterson of Republican City and his special friend, Debra Ebsen of Verdigre, Nebraska; thirteen grandchildren; twenty-five great-grandchildren; and a host of great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, December 7, 2014 from 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. with the family greeting friends from 1:30 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. at the Bauer-Torrey & Mach Funeral Home in Alma.
