Funeral Services for Doris I. Sell will be conducted on Thursday, July 2, 2009 at 10:30 a.m. at the Presbyterian Church of Orleans, Nebraska with Pastor Dave Irwin, officiating. Interment will be in the Orleans Cemetery at Orleans.
Doris Iola Sell, 93 years of age, of Orleans, passed away on Monday, June 29, 2009 at her home in Orleans. She was born February 5, 1916 in Harlan County, Nebraska, south of Orleans, the fourth of six children born to Judson Colwell and Anna Mae (Coe) Russell. Doris received her primary education from District #60 south of Orleans and then Orleans Public School.
On March 10, 1934 she was united in marriage to Oliver Irvin "Stub" Sell at the courthouse in Phillipsburg, Kansas. To this union three children were born: Verlene, Jim and Allene. The couple made their home in Kansas and later engaged in farming in Harlan County, near Orleans. In 1965, Doris and Stub moved into Orleans. Doris had been employed through the years by Swanson's Processing Plant in Oxford, Nebraska, the Orleans Grocery Store, the Orleans Café and Artistic Woven Labels in Holdrege, Nebraska prior to her retirement. In March of 2005, they celebrated their 71st Wedding Anniversary. Doris was preceded in death by her husband, Stub on September 18, 2005.
Doris was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Orleans. Doris was an excellent cook, and baked pies daily. She was a talented seamstress, making clothing for her children and grandchildren. Doris enjoyed crocheting, and loved sharing many of her Afghans with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Most of all she loved spending time with her family.
She leaves to mourn her passing her son, Jim Sell and his wife, Diane of Holdrege; her two daughters: Verlene Schroder and her husband, Kenny of Orleans and Allene Gimeson and her husband, Don of Kearney, Nebraska; eight grandchildren, thirty great-grandchildren; eleven great-great grandchildren; one brother, Jim Russell and his wife, Evelyn of Holdrege; brother-in-law, Bill Sell of Holdrege; two sisters-in-law: Agnes Russell of Alma, Nebraska and Elva Bushnell of Grants Pass, Oregon; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Besides her parents and husband, Doris was preceded in death by her two brothers: Jerold and Art Russell; two sisters: Evelyn Bemiss and Elsie Randall.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, July 1, 2009 from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Mitchell Funeral Home in Orleans with the family greeting friends from 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.
A memorial has been established in her memory and will be designated at a later date.
