Mass of Christian Burial for Doris G. Vandiver will be conducted at the Holdrege Memorial Homes Chapel in Holdrege, Nebraska on Friday, January 31, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. with Father Thomas Lux and Reverend Jean Clayton, officiating. Interment will be held at the Prairie Home Cemetery at Holdrege following the service.
Marie Doris Gertrude (Turgeon) Vandiver, 90 years of age, of Holdrege, passed away on Tuesday, January 28, 2014 at the Phelps Memorial Health Center in Holdrege. Doris was born May 3, 1923 at Lowell, Massachusetts, the youngest of nine children born to Phillipe and Anna (Demarais) Turgeon. She was baptized at Lowell on May 4, 1923. She received her education from Lowell and Lawrence, Massachusetts. Following her education, Doris was employed in the Lawrence area.
Nearing the end of WW II, Doris met the love of her life, Francis L. "Bud" Vandiver while he was assigned to the U.S.S. Macon on the east coast. The couple were united in marriage on June 22, 1946 in Lawrence. To this union two daughters were born: Linda and Teresa.
After her husband's naval discharge, the Vandiver's lived in Lawrence for a period of time. Then in 1948, they relocated to Norton, Kansas, where Bud began his career with Kansas-Nebraska Natural Gas Co. In 1950 they were transferred to Phillipsburg, Kansas with Bud's employer. In 1952 they received an additional transfer to Hastings until 1959, when they settled to Holdrege, where they continued to live the remainder of their married lives. Doris was a full time devoted mother to her two daughters during their younger years. She was employed by Hested's Company in Holdrege and later was employed with the Holdrege Public Schools in food service until her retirement in 1983.
On January 8, 2012, she was preceded in death by her husband, Bud. At the time of Doris' passing she made her home at Holdrege Memorial Homes, where she received loving care from all the staff.
Mrs. Vandiver enjoyed golfing, fishing, camping, traveling, playing cards and was an avid bowler. She enjoyed attending many bowling tournaments, where she received many trophies. She was a member of the All Saints Catholic Church in Holdrege, and enjoyed many friendship bonds that were formed through the years being involved in several traveling card parties.
Besides her husband, and parents; Doris was preceded in death by her five brothers: Freddy, Joseph, Omer, Leo, and Clovis Turgeon; three sisters: Estelle Poirier, Bertha Guimond, and Rita Francis; and several extended family as well.
She is survived by her two daughters: Linda Haney and her husband, David of Salina, Kansas and Teresa Williams and her husband, Steve of Holdrege; three grandchildren: Jason Haney and his wife, Janice, Chad Williams and Kara Dizmang and her husband, Shannon; four great-grandchildren: Jade and Joy Haney and Kyle and Zachery Dizmang; and a very special niece and nephew, Edna Fryberg of Gorham, Maine and Jack Poirier of Rowley, Massachusetts and a host of other relatives and friends.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, January 30, 2014 from 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at the Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Holdrege.
A memorial has been established in Doris' honor and kindly suggested to the All Saints Catholic Church, Phelps Memorial Health Center or Holdrege Memorial Homes.
