Dorothy Anna Helen Langenberg, 91 years old, of Holdrege, formerly of Bertrand, passed away on Thursday, July 19, 2018 at Holdrege Memorial Homes in Holdrege. She was born on June 8, 1927 on a farm near Atlanta, Nebraska, the youngest of 13 children born to Henry Hermann and Dora Maria (Kohler) Langenberg. She was baptized on August 25, 1927 by Rev. H. Wm Meyer at St. John's Lutheran Church in Oxford, Nebraska and was confirmed on June 21, 1942 by Rev. M. Matuschke at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Bertrand. In March of 1933, the family moved to the Rock Falls Township in Phelps County, Nebraska.
Dorothy attended school at West Sunny Side District #1 and also at Rock Falls School District #42. Dorothy lived in Rock Falls Township for 33 years, 10 of those years on the farm known as "Rock Falls."
She enjoyed farm living and spent those years sharing farm work with her family. In 1944, her father was told he had a heart problem, so the family took over the farm work. In 1950, Dorothy and her sister, Agnes were left to care for their parents and the farm work. Dorothy did the tractor work for 17 years, and the rest of the work they did together raising and milking cows, caring for baby chickens and laying hens, fixing fences and other work that needed done on the farm.
On October 4, 1954, her father had a bad disabling stroke, so Dorothy, her sister Agnes and her mother cared for him for five years until he passed away in July 1959. They continued to farm until they sold the farm in the fall of 1966, and moved into Holdrege.
On October 13, 1966, Dorothy and Agnes were employed as Nurse's Aides at Methodist Memorial Homes. They worked together on the same shift for 20 years until their retirement in January of 1987. They also took care of their mother, until she passed away in July of 1975.
With their health failing, Dorothy and Agnes moved into Holdrege Memorial Homes in 2011, where they continued to live together. They lived together for 84 years until Agnes' death on February 16, 2016.
In March of 1976, Dorothy transferred her membership to Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Holdrege where she and Agnes enjoyed helping ladies tie quilts until their health would not allow them to attend meetings. During her retirement, Dorothy continued to sew for the church, at her home: making quilt tops, quilts for the Ladies Aid, to tie for baby quilts; wheelchair lap robes; even crocheting names and doilies; and other crafts for her family and friends.
Besides her parents; Dorothy was preceded in death by all of her siblings, including; a sister and a brother in infancy; five sisters: Agnes Langenberg, Clara Michel, Anna Ebmeier, Laura Johnson, and Helen Michel; five brothers: Harold Langenberg, Irvin Langenberg, Albert Langenberg, Henry Langenberg, Jr., and Lester Langenberg; three nieces: Shirley Schroeder, Barbara Monson, Eileen Beman; six nephews: Kenneth Ebmeier, Richard Ebmeier, Lloyd Johnson, Larry D. Langenberg, Jerry L. Ebmeier and Randy Langenberg.
She is survived by sister-in-law, Mrs. Irvin (Marie) Langenberg of Lincoln, Nebraska; nieces and nephews: Roy R. Johnson of North Carolina, Susan Ryan of Lincoln, Peggy Langenberg of Lincoln, Beverly Schroeder and her husband, Gerald of Minnesota, Alan Michel and his wife, Carol of Texas, John Michel and his wife, Gail of Colorado, Ronald Langenberg of Iowa, Larry E.
