Dorothy F. Olson

A Memorial Service for Dorothy F. Olson will be held on Saturday, December 2, 2023 at 11:00 a.m., at the Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Holdrege, Nebraska with Pastor Kenton Birtell officiating. A private family inurnment will be held prior to the memorial service at the Prairie Home Cemetery in Holdrege.

Dorothy Florene Olson, 83 years of age, of Holdrege, passed away on November 7, 2023, at her home in Holdrege surrounded by her family. Dorothy was born on November 15, 1939, south of Holbrook, Nebraska in Furnas County. She was the tenth of eleven children born to Roy W. and Rose May (Sink) Hammond. Dorothy received her education from Holbrook Public Schools through the 6th grade, and later attended Holdrege Public Schools, graduating with the class of 1957.

On May 26, 1957, she was united in marriage to Wayne C. Olson at the First Baptist Church in Holdrege and to this union four children were born: Bonny, Brenda, Robert, and Lori. The couple made their home near Holdrege, where Dorothy worked alongside Wayne on their family farm and focused on raising their children. The couple retired in 1998, and began to winter in Estes Park, Colorado for many years and enjoyed their time there.  The couple moved back to Holdrege in 2007. On December 13, 2021, Wayne preceded her in death.

Dorothy enjoyed cooking for others as they came to visit. She was an avid reader and throughout the years, enjoyed collecting elephants.

Besides her husband and parents, Dorothy was preceded in death by: one great-granddaughter, Hope Martin; brothers: Robert Hammond in infancy; and J.R. Hammond; and C.E. "Lucky" Hammond; sisters:  Darlena June Elston; Berdena Ryan; Donna Eckwall; and Twilla Powley; brothers-in-law: Darrell Elston; and Gayle Olson; sister-in-law, Jan Hammond; and one nephew, Kenny Olson.

She leaves to celebrate her life; her children: Bonny Kroeker and her husband, Glen of Juniata, Nebraska; Brenda Martin and her husband, Theron of Wilcox, Nebraska; Robert Olson and his wife, Kristin of Holdrege; and Lori Clark and her husband, Lonnie of Longmont, Colorado; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; sisters, Illa (Eugene) Remmels of Loveland, CO; and Sharon Cover of Ohio; brother, Sidney (Mary) Hammond of Holdrege; brothers-in-law:  Bill Ryan of Sun City, AZ; Ralph Eckwall of Austin, TX; Jack Powley of Yutan, NE; one sister-in-law, Claire Olson of Holdrege; along with a host of nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.

A Memorial book signing will be held on Friday, December 1, 2023 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Holdrege, with the family greeting from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

A memorial has been established in Dorothy's honor, and kindly suggested to the Phelps County Christian Charity Fund at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church; 1419 East Avenue, Holdrege, Ne 68949; or to the Summer Lunch Program at the Wilcox United Methodist Church, 204 East Sapp Street, Wilcox, Ne 68982.
