Funeral Services for Edwin A. "Ed" Weiss will be conducted from the Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Holdrege, Nebraska on Wednesday, August 29, 2012 at 10:30 a.m. with Reverend Kenton Birtell officiating. Interment will be in the Prairie Home Cemetery, with Military Honors provided by the American Legion Post # 66 in conjunction with the United States Army National Guard.

Edwin August Weiss, 97 years of age, of Holdrege, Nebraska passed away on Friday, August 24, 2012 at Holdrege Memorial Homes in Holdrege. Ed and his twin brother, Alvin, were born August 16, 1915 on the Weiss family farm, north of York, Nebraska the third and fourth of five children to Karl and Alwine (Junge) Weiss.

He was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church, north of York, NE. He attended schools in the Benedict and York area until he left school in his teen years to work the family farm during the depression years.

He served in the United States Army, assigned to the, 71st Division, from February 1941 until his Honorable Discharge in October 1945. During his service years, he was stationed at various U.S. bases as well as overseas, in Panama for 2 years and Europe for one year traveling through France, Germany and Austria.

He married Irene Engel on November 3, 1944. After leaving the service, they farmed in Perkins County for 5 years until they moved to their farm north of Holdrege in 1952. He farmed there until his retirement in 1987, where upon he and Irene moved into their lovely home in Holdrege, NE. He was a member of the Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church since 1952, serving as a Trustee for a number of years. For many years, Ed was a school board member of R-4 School, north of Holdrege.

During his retirement years, he enjoyed woodworking in his garage and traveling. But his greatest joy was spending time with his family.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Paul and his wife, Irene; his twin brother, Alvin and his wife, Lila; sisters Helen Weiss; Anna and her husband, Roy Carlson; niece, Linda (Weiss) Lommasonn; nephew, Clifford Engel; great-nephews, Rob Weiss and Brian Engel; great-niece, Tatiana Weiss; and sister-in-law Dorothy (Engel) Mahnken and her husband, Carl Mahnken.

He is survived by his loving wife, Irene Weiss; sons, Donald and his wife, Rita, of Colorado Springs, Colorado; Wayne and his wife, Rosalee, of Grand Island, Nebraska; Marvin and his wife, Lonna, of Holdrege; daughters, JoAnn Cogil and her husband, Jim of Grimes, Iowa; and Janice Stehlik and her husband, Brent, of Lincoln, Nebraska, nine grandchildren, Christy Wolcott and her husband, Andrew; Susan Fonyonga and her husband, Mark; Patty Bydalek and her husband, Bryan, Tamara Heim and her husband, Jake; Adam Stehlik; Charles Cogil; Aaron Stehlik; Karl Weiss and his wife, Nikki; and Travis Weiss; seven great-grandchildren, Cole Wolcott; Natalee, Braxton and Rebecca Fonyonga; Spencer and Fletcher Bydalek; and Jack Heim, brother-in-law, Dale Engel and his wife, Marilyn, of Ogallala, Nebraska, along with many other relatives and friends.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, August 28, 2012 from 1:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. with the family greeting from 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. at the Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Holdrege.

A memorial has been established and will be designated at a later date.
