Funeral services for Elinor Johnson will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, August 11, 2009 at the United Methodist Church in Holdrege, Nebraska with the Rev. Dale Lambert officiating. Interment will be held at the Prairie Home Cemetery in Holdrege.
Elinor Johnson, 79 years of age, of Holdrege, Nebraska, passed away on Friday, August 7, 2009 at the Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings, Nebraska. She was born on June 6, 1930 south of Elwood, Nebraska in Gosper county, the second of three children of Earl and Esther (Swanson) Dunbar. She attended rural Gosper county schools and graduated with the Elwood High School class of 1947. Elinor then worked as a school teacher for three years after graduation. She later attended summer education sessions at Kearney State College.
On July 29, 1950, she was united in marriage to James Lloyd Johnson in Holdrege. The couple was blessed with one son, Gerald James. The family made their home near Holdrege where Elinor taught school in rural Phelps County for one year. The family then moved northeast of Holdrege where they farmed sever plots of land around Holdrege and Bertrand.
Elinor was an outstanding cook. She loved canning items like pickles, tomatoes and many other foods and vegetables.
She was a member of the united Methodist Church in Holdrege, where she was active in the Naomi Circle and the United Methodist Women's group. She was also a member of the Holdrege Eagles Auxiliary where she served in many offices, including president. She especially enjoyed accompanying Jim to state pool and shuffleboard tournaments.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Delores Steinbrink.
She leaves to mourn her passing, her husband, Jim of Franklin, NE; one son, Gerald "Jerry" Johnson of Holdrege, NE; grandson, Eric Johnson and his wife Amanda, of Carter Lake, Iowa; one great-grandson, Zachary Johnson of Grand Island, NE; brother, Duane Dunbar and his wife Beth of North Platte, NE, as well as a host nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Visitation will be held prior to service times on Tuesday, August 11, 2009 at the United Methodist Church in Holdrege.
Memorials are suggested to the United Methodist Church in Holdrege.
