Memorial services for Elsie Jones will be held Saturday, January 2, at 10:30 a.m., at the Trinity Evangelical Free Church in Holdrege.
Elsie Marie Peterson was born February 23, 1917, to Arthur L and Maria (Svedberg) Peterson, in Ellsworth, Wisconsin. She passed away on December 29, 2009 at Holdrege.
After Elsie graduated from high school in Ellsworth, her parents moved to St. Paul, Minnesota.
After completing business school, she was employed for several years at a nation-wide clothing distributorship. She accepted a Civil Service appointment in May 1941, to Washington, D.C., where she was employed at the War Department for several years.
On May 24, 1943, she married Marlin Jones at the Chapel at Fort Lincoln, in Fredericks County, Maryland.
When Marlin was assigned to Naval duty in Stockholm Sweden, in 1944, Elsie moved to St Paul, Minnesota, living there until Marlin's return in December of 1945.
The Joneses moved to Holdrege in April of 1947, where Marlin operated an insurance agency until September 2002, when he retired. Elsie served as bookkeeper/secretary in the business until failing health forced her retirement.
She was a long-time member of Trinity Evangelical Free Church, where she taught a Sunday School class of three and four-year olds for fifty-plus years. During these years she also served as treasurer of the Women's Missionary Society, and was active in serving various social gatherings at the church.
Elsie was an excellent cook, with pastries being her forte. She particularly enjoyed entertaining her grandchildren. Her family was proud of her academic accomplishments and athletic ability. She was an avid golfer in her earlier years.
She is survived by her husband, Marlin; children: Karen Crocker and her husband, Ron of Kearney; the Reverend Gary Jones and his wife Cynthia, of Monticello, Minnesota, and Lynn Jones, of Lincoln; grand-children, Joel Crocker and his wife, Kay of Omaha; Amy AuchMoedy and her husband, Matt; Holly Baete and her husband, Craig, all of Lincoln; Nate Crocker and his wife Carissa, of Overland Park, Kansas; Rachel Kask and her husband Ben of Taipei, Taiwan; Sarah Hoover and her husband Nate of Denver, Colorado; Abigail and Anna Jones, of Monticello, Minnesota; along with ten great-grandchildren, and a host of friends. Her sister, Dr. Anne Peterson recently moved to Holdrege to assist with her care.
She was predeceased by her parents, a brother Clarence Peterson and his wife Natalia, of Omaha, a brother, Orville Peterson and his wife Betty, of St. Paul, Minnesota, sisters Ruth Hickey and her husband John of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and Elenore Williams and her husband John, of Durham, North Carolina.
There will be no visitation. Her family is honoring her wish for cremation.
A memorial has been established in her memory and will be designated at a later date.
