Memorial Mass for Ernest Alois "Nick" Streff will be held on Wednesday, September 19, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Orleans, Nebraska with Monsignor Paul Witt as Celebrant. Rosary will be recited at 9:30 a.m. at the church. Inurnment will follow at the Mt. Calvary Catholic Cemetery at Orleans.
Nick Streff, 94 years of age, of Alma, Nebraska (formerly of Orleans), passed away on Wednesday, September 12, 2018 at the Colonial Villa-Good Samaritan at Alma. Nick was born June 6, 1924 in Harlan County, Nebraska, on the family farm north of Orleans, the youngest of nine children born to Alois "Al" and Susan (Hoxmeier) Streff. Nick attended District #27 country school, north of Orleans. Al's health began to fail and after Nick completed the eighth grade he helped work the family farm.
In 1947, he was united in marriage to Eileen Haeker at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Orleans, and their union was blessed with two sons: Steve and Tim. The family made their home north of Orleans, where Nick continued to engage in farming and enjoyed the labor of the land. After many decades of hard work, Nick and Eileen retired and moved to Alma.
Nick was a faithful member of St. Mary's Catholic Church including singing in the choir and being an honorary member of The Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed many pursuits: dancing, playing cards, St. Louis Cardinals baseball, and Husker Football. Nick had many fond memories of playing both baseball and fast pitch softball, especially his time spent at first base where he dared hitters to get one past him. He also enjoyed coaching youth baseball.
Nick loved his family and treasured all the time spent with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He was an all-around good guy, wisecracking notwithstanding.
Besides his parents; Nick was preceded in death by three brothers, five sisters, and many extended family members.
Nick leaves to celebrate his life: his beloved wife, Eileen of Alma; two sons: Steve Streff and his wife, Betty of Kearney, and Tim Streff and his wife, Margaret of Omaha; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and many friends.
There will be no visitation. The family is honoring his wish for cremation.
A memorial has been established in Nick's honor and kindly suggested to the new Harlan County Medical Project.
